After months of anticipation, including casting news, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and excited comments from the actors, the first trailer for HBO’s new Harry Potter series is finally here. The trailer quickly gained a lot of attention, following the release of the first official image and early set peeks. When the series was first announced, many fans wondered what the point of a reboot was. However, it’s now clear that this new series aims to be a more accurate adaptation of the books than the original films.
Now that the first trailer has been released, it seems like the series is living up to expectations, especially in how closely it follows the original book. The first season will have eight episodes and cover the entire story from the first book. Many viewers are simply enjoying the show, with one YouTube commenter saying it feels like returning to Hogwarts. However, some fans are cautiously optimistic, worried that it won’t live up to the source material. One difference between the series and the films that fans are noticing is the time period: the show accurately portrays the setting as 1991-1998, while the films were set between 2001 and 2008.
Harry Potter Fans Praise HBO Trailer for Minor Book Details
The new trailer for Harry Potter shows some story moments and character details that weren’t included in the first movie. These include the primary school Harry went to before Hogwarts – St. Grogory’s – and a scene of Aunt Petunia giving him a haircut that quickly grew back, hinting at his unusual nature. Fans were thrilled with these glimpses, with many commenting that these small details were exactly what they’d been hoping for.
On X, formerly Twitter, fans eagerly discussed the show, particularly praising its high production quality and how it brought back nostalgic childhood memories.
Wow, seeing the new Harry Potter trailer was so strange! They really seem to be paying attention to the details from the books, which is great, but it also left me feeling conflicted. Honestly, when I heard about the reboot, I didn’t think much of it. Now, it feels like they’re actually putting in the effort, but knowing that J.K. Rowling directly profits from it makes me really unsure about how I feel. It’s a tough situation.

Even people who thought they wouldn’t be impressed were surprised, and one person commented online:
I don’t usually get excited about Harry Potter, but this looks fantastic! It might convince me to revisit the movies and definitely check this out when it comes out. Plus, the trailer was expertly made.

While the trailer has many fans excited about the new adaptations, not everyone is convinced. Some viewers noticed visual echoes of the original movies, while others pointed out that the show’s dark aesthetic seems to follow a current trend for gloomy content on streaming services.
What bothers me most about the new Harry Potter trailer is the same thing that bothered me about the Moana trailer: it feels very similar to other recent streaming shows. It doesn’t really stand out as something new or unique.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m really disappointed by this new remake. If you’re looking for the true story, I highly recommend reading the books – and even better, listening to Stephen Fry read them while you do! The original movies were amazing because of the actors, and this remake doesn’t seem to offer anything new in that regard.

Even with some concerns being raised, Warner Bros. Discovery is heavily investing in a new Harry Potter TV series, planning to adapt all seven books over the next ten years. HBO executive Casey Bloys has hinted at the show’s massive scope, but also acknowledged that releasing a new season every year won’t be realistic. It will be interesting to see how the show is received over time, particularly considering rising production costs and potential variations in the release schedule between seasons. The big question is whether audiences will remain engaged for an entire decade. Currently, fans seem excited to see the project begin.
