Viewers watching the documentary Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette might have been surprised to learn that Carolyn had a third passenger join her and JFK Jr. on the flight that ultimately led to their tragic deaths, especially if they weren’t already familiar with the details of the crash.
As the series nears its heartbreaking conclusion on March 26th, you likely know that Carolyn’s sister, 34-year-old Lauren Bessette, was also on the plane with her and John F. Kennedy Jr.
Although there’s been extensive news coverage of the tragic deaths of the 38-year-old heir to the Kennedy family and his 33-year-old wife, the death of their child, Laurendied, is often presented as just another sad part of the story.
The show Love Story began by showing the end of a relationship on July 16, 1999, before flashing back to 1992 to depict how Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) and John (Paul Anthony Kelly) first met. A key part of the story was highlighting the close relationship between the sisters, and they intentionally featured Lauren, played by Sydney Lemmon, to emphasize this bond.
According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the character was frequently overlooked. The writers decided to have Carolyn turn to her sister for support, as they had a strong and close relationship, when she needed someone to confide in.

According to Lemmon, playing sisters in the new film felt natural because she and her co-star, Pidgeon, were already familiar with each other from working together in New York theater. She shared this at the film’s premiere on March 17 with TopMob News.
Although often overlooked in accounts of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s life, she had a twin sister named Lisa Ann Bessette, who is an art historian. According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Lisa Ann was more reserved and introverted than both Carolyn and her other sister.
Lauren has several scenes in Love Story that feel realistic and relatable. For example, Carolyn tries to smooth things over with her future sister-in-law by asking Caroline Kennedy (Grace Gummer) to be her maid of honor, hoping to make everyone feel involved in the wedding plans.
“This will mean nothing to her,” Lauren tells Carolyn. “And it would have meant everything to me.”

The sisters remained very close, even when Lauren, a Morgan Stanley executive, worked for four years in Hong Kong. She returned to New York in early 1998 and purchased a loft in Tribeca on White Street, conveniently located just a few blocks from where John and Carolyn resided at 20 North Moore.
Born just over a year apart, the sisters were very close growing up, though they didn’t always share the same friends. Their parents, Ann Messina, a teacher, and William Bessette, a civil engineer, divorced in 1974. Shortly after, the girls moved with their mother and her new husband, Richard Freeman, an orthopedic surgeon, from White Plains, New York, to Greenwich, Connecticut.
At Greenwich High School, both twins were strong students. According to a friend, Lauren was focused and hardworking, while Lisa was more artistic and sensitive.
Lisa went to the University of Michigan, while Carolyn attended Boston University. Lauren earned an economics degree from Hobart and William Smith College in New York in 1986. A lab within the college’s Asian Languages and Cultures program is named in her honor. She then worked on Wall Street and completed her MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1991.
Lauren’s college advisor, Patrick McGuire, described her as a remarkably bright, confident, and well-spoken young woman. After her death, he told the Associated Press that she was an exceptional student and a joy to be around.

According to former coworker Adam Clammer, people initially underestimated her. He told Town & Country that she’d enter a room and people would assume she was an assistant. But then she’d surprise everyone by delivering a pitch for an initial public offering – in Mandarin! – leaving people amazed and impressed.
“She was so humble,” he added, “yet so smart and poised.”
Adam also shared that Lauren was a remarkably kind and generous person, always making time for others. He described her as humble, funny, and possessing a fantastic sense of style. Though Carolyn was known for her work with Calvin Klein, Lauren preferred the Prada brand.
Adam remembered that when Carolyn got engaged to John, Lauren was genuinely happy for her sister, but she also wanted to maintain a sense of independence and focus on her own life.

Carolyn and John’s marriage, which began on September 21, 1996, quickly faced difficulties. Constant attention from the paparazzi and intense tabloid coverage of Carolyn’s every action – something John suggested she accept – created tension and drove them apart.

Lauren was planning to return to New York and felt her sister needed someone to lean on, though Jack Merrill, a friend of John’s, explained to Beller that it wasn’t about constant, hands-on care. Carolyn simply needed a supportive friend during a difficult time with multiple challenges.
They were “already close,” he said, “but they became closer than ever.”
Lauren, described by Merill as having a similar wit and personality to Carolyn but being more reserved, was promoted to principal at Morgan Stanley. The next position she could have achieved would have been managing director.
Chip Arndt, the winner of The Amazing Race season four and a friend of Lauren’s from both New York and Hong Kong, shared with Beller that he also respected her sister Carolyn’s privacy. He only mentioned once that Carolyn was facing some difficulties.
According to William Peter Owen, a friend of the Bessette family, Carolyn would often go to Lauren’s apartment to relax and complain about the constant intrusion into her personal life.
With Lauren playing a bigger role in her life, Carolyn began to feel more optimistic. By early 1999, the sisters had started rebuilding their relationship with their father, William, a move John supported. This was particularly meaningful to John, as he was only three days old when his own father was assassinated.
According to Chip, as reported by Beller, Lauren was incredibly creative, fun-loving, and a joy to be around. He also admired her ability to excel at work while still fully enjoying her personal life.

Lauren had a close relationship with her sister, so when she suggested Carolyn attend Rory Kennedy’s wedding with John – even though they were going through a rough patch in their marriage – Carolyn took her advice.
On July 16, 1999, John, a licensed pilot since 1998, and Carolyn planned to fly Lauren to Martha’s Vineyard. Lauren was hoping to see Bobby Shriver, John’s cousin and Maria Shriver’s brother, before they all continued on to a wedding in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
Lauren and John met at the George office in Manhattan after work. John then drove them to Essex County Airport in New Jersey. Carolyn arrived separately by car service around 8 p.m., having been slowed down by Friday traffic. They departed in John’s Piper Saratoga airplane at 8:38 p.m.
The flight was scheduled to be under an hour long. At 10:05 p.m., air traffic control on Martha’s Vineyard contacted authorities to report the plane hadn’t arrived. The next day, Lauren’s luggage washed ashore at Philbin Beach on Martha’s Vineyard, and her luggage tag was still attached.
On July 21st, Navy divers retrieved the bodies of John, Carolyn, and Lauren from the Atlantic Ocean. They were still strapped into their seats.

On July 22nd, the ashes of the three individuals were scattered at sea. A private memorial service for John and Carolyn took place on July 23rd at St. Thomas More Church in New York City, and another service was held the next day at Christ Church in Greenwich.
In a statement to the press gathered outside their home after the accident, Ann, Richard, and William wrote that John and Carolyn were deeply connected and wished to be remembered simply, reflecting the way they lived. They found comfort knowing John and Carolyn would always be there for their daughter, Lauren.
Here’s a look at how the series Love Story accurately portrayed John and Carolyn’s relationship, from their first dates to their marriage and ultimately, the final moments of their lives—and what details were changed or added for dramatic impact.

Carolyn feels more and more alone in her Tribeca apartment, worn out by the constant attention of the paparazzi and upset by the untrue and sensational stories about her in the tabloids—everything from depression to drug use and even pregnancy. When she learns about the death of Princess Diana in a car accident, she’s shocked and can’t look away from the television. Meanwhile, her husband, John, worries about something trivial—whether the dishes are clean—and then goes for a run.
Carolyn explains that despite Princess Diana doing everything right and cooperating with photographers, the paparazzi relentlessly pursued her car on the night of August 31, 1997, in Paris, ultimately leading to her death.

Honestly, John confessed to me later that he was terrified – absolutely terrified – that I’d just… never leave the house again. Like, I’d be stuck inside forever. But then he admitted he was scared too. He said if he started watching the news about Diana, really watching it, he’d just… he’d never be able to turn it off. He actually said he’d never stop watching. It was… intense. He was really worried about getting completely consumed by it all.
In person, John tried to convince the Queen to appear on the cover of George magazine, but she respectfully refused. Carolyn also attended the funeral of fashion designer Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22, 1997, and sat close to Princess Diana. Biz Mitchell, who was the editor-in-chief of George at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter that John was hesitant to cover Diana’s death. Ultimately, they published a moving photo essay documenting the public’s grief in London.
Carolyn was deeply affected by the death of Princess Diana. John confided in his friend Billy Noonan, saying he didn’t know how to help her because she was very shaken up.
In her 2017 memoir, Jackie’s Girl, Kathy McKeon, who worked for Jacqueline Kennedy, shared a story about a family dinner in Hyannis Port following Princess Diana’s funeral. McKeon recalled that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy expressed strong dislike for the paparazzi who constantly followed her, reportedly saying she “hated those bastards.”
She said she’d have preferred to yell and swear at them, explaining that they had been very close behind her as they followed her into the building, according to McKeon.
To which John said, “You gotta just take it easy. Relax.”

After John’s dinner party—which he presented as being for Carolyn’s friends, though she corrected him, saying they were friends of both of them—a major argument erupts between the couple as Carolyn clears the table.
There was some tension between John and Carolyn. John joked that he was glad he never let Carolyn meet his mother, implying she wouldn’t have approved of their relationship. Carolyn, in turn, said John only contacted her when he felt he needed to, adding that she believed it was difficult for him to witness the unhappiness he caused her.
Their argument is completely destructive. She feels he doesn’t give her any room to breathe, and he claims she defines herself only by being a victim. It culminates in John announcing he’s going to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, exhausted by the look in her eyes that tells him he’s ruining their marriage.
She begs him not to leave, and he promises he’ll be back.
If this is the check-in at the Stanhope Hotel two days before the plane crash on July 16, 1999, it would mean the timeline in Love Story jumps ahead almost two years. Despite facing difficulties in their final weeks, the couple also enjoyed travel, social events, and some happiness during their almost three years together.
As Beller pointed out, negative stories about their relationship – rumors of trouble or unhappiness – consistently attracted more attention and boosted newspaper sales. Pictures of Carolyn looking distressed also proved popular, and this pattern continued throughout their lives.

Just before things got tense, John proposed they head out, but Carolyn gently reminded him to rest, pointing out he was still recovering from a crash with his Buckeye powered parachute and was using crutches.
She adds, “Didn’t you promise Caroline you were done flying?”
This scene, like many others in the series, subtly reminds us of the importance of planes and flying, constantly hinting at the ultimate destination of this love story.
John was still recovering from a broken ankle when he took that flight. He’d injured it in May 1999 while piloting a powered parachute, and had been using crutches ever since.
In his 2004 book, The Kennedy Curse, Edward Klein wrote that Jacqueline Kennedy begged her son not to pursue a pilot’s license. She reportedly said, “Please don’t do it,” explaining that the family had already experienced too many tragic deaths.

In the seventh episode, titled “Obsession,” the newly married couple comes home from their honeymoon in Turkey to discover a large group of photographers camped outside their New York City apartment, and they refuse to go away.
It was genuinely as awful as people said. Paparazzi relentlessly followed Carolyn, constantly asking for a smile. When she refused to answer their intrusive questions – like whether she was expecting a baby – some began to insult her, hoping to provoke a response.
According to MJ Bettenhausen, as recounted in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she got married. Bettenhausen believed this was another way Carolyn’s independent nature was restricted.

The costume designer for Love Story, Rudy Mance, accurately reproduced the complete Prada outfit Carolyn wore when she first encountered the paparazzi, just after she and John returned home.
The woman’s outfit – a camel-colored pencil skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag – mirrored her personality: stylish and sophisticated, yet understated.
Mance shared on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. He explained they spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was worried, but John tried to improve things outside their house. He asked the photographers to be respectful of his wife and give her some privacy as she got used to her new life.
According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and asked everyone to respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.
According to Steve Gillon’s 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John F. Kennedy Jr. and the paparazzi ended immediately after his public statement. As he and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy walked to their car, photographers abandoned their agreed-upon distance and rushed forward, each trying to get a unique photograph. This chaotic scene terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview seemed to go perfectly. However, as she left, she discovered a crowd of photographers waiting outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly decided to withdraw from consideration.
Okay, so everyone thinks Carolyn never actually worked for Ralph Lauren, but honestly, the story is even better! Apparently, Ralph was just completely captivated by her style. I read in Harper’s Bazaar that he actually told his entire design team to keep Carolyn in mind with every single thing they created! Like, “Think of Carolyn Bessette!” Can you believe it? It’s just… everything. He was so obsessed with her look, he wanted it infused into everything Ralph Lauren! It’s iconic, honestly. I’m telling you, she was a muse!

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.
Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that she’d lost the benefit of the doubt. She explained, as difficult as it might be, that people would be quick to judge her. She cautioned that men could be hurtful, frustrating, and even drive her to despair, and urged her not to let them.
Ethel brought Carolyn to her home and, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book The Kennedy Heirs, told her she needed to ignore the negativity and move forward.
According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once confided that being a member of the Kennedy family came with its challenges. However, the mother of eleven explained that she eventually realized the key to coping was to affirm her own self-worth each day. She would look in the mirror and tell herself, simply, ‘I am enough.’ She said that with time, this message truly resonated, and she understood that her value wasn’t dependent on anyone – not even the Kennedys – and could never be taken from her.
I remember Ethel being so worried after that incident! She really stressed to Carolyn that losing her temper like that in public was a no-go. Ethel explained that these men were deliberately trying to provoke a reaction, and Carolyn absolutely couldn’t let them succeed or appear to lose control in front of everyone. It was a really important lesson about keeping your composure, and I’ve always remembered it.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning process.
Carolyn believes her sister feels left out. She worries that if this isn’t addressed, it could damage their relationship, and she doesn’t want to start her marriage with any unresolved resentment.
Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”
John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend fences. His sister had both blamed Carolyn for a public scene and taken it as a reason to call off the wedding. John believed having Carolyn ask Caroline was the best way to resolve the situation.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal issues were becoming a distraction, and Calvin confessed he was surprised and a little hurt by the news.
He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she’d be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez – a former colleague – designing her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.
“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”
In the movie Love Story, Calvin learns about the dress because Carolyn was previously photographed with the designer, Narciso Rodriguez, and another Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy quit her job before she started seriously planning her wedding.

I’m really concerned about Carolyn. As her mother, Ann Freeman (Constance Zimmer), I’m afraid she’s losing herself in this marriage. I tried to tell her my worries privately, but honestly, I couldn’t help but voice them to everyone during my toast at the rehearsal dinner. I just want her to be happy and stay true to herself.
Ann described John as incredibly charismatic and overwhelming, admitting she was concerned about how Carolyn could stay grounded around someone with such a powerful personality. She hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive whenever she needs him.
John quietly tells his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.
Although the specifics of what Ann said remain unclear, John’s friend, Robert Littell, recalled in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it could be detrimental to her daughter’s well-being.
And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”
Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed hours earlier. This suggests that the romantic scene in the movie Love Story—where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding—was simply a fictional addition for dramatic effect.

Carolyn panicked when she realized she’d have to pull Narciso’s zipperless dress over her head after her makeup was already finished.
Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique wedding bands featuring rattlesnake ribs, shared in an interview that dressing Carolyn felt incredibly delicate – like smoothing cream over her skin. Narciso, her husband, was meticulously trying to fasten the dress. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to adjust the neckline, opening and re-closing it, and then they covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.
Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything possible to ensure they’re happy and the day goes smoothly.
In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony began at 7 p.m. instead of the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles to light the space.

In the fifth episode, John proposes to Carolyn while they’re rowing a boat, following a trip to Hyannis Port. This is where Carolyn has just met John’s family, including his powerful aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper), for the very first time.
Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.
In 1994, for Labor Day weekend, John brought Carolyn to his family’s vacation home. He did sign up to help with breakfast while they were there, but didn’t ask her to join him.
Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He proposed on a boat, playfully telling her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner.”
He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. While on the show, John F. Kennedy Jr. claimed the ring belonged to his mother, the truth is he had it specially made. He asked Jackie Kennedy’s close friend, Maurice Tempelsman, to design a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring – often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.
According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before responding to a proposal. While biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli wrote that she didn’t explicitly say yes, she wore an engagement ring and told friends they were planning a wedding. However, in an oral history, RoseMarie Terenzio recalled Carolyn telling her they did get engaged over the holiday weekend.
Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months leading up to their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn enjoyed a close relationship with her boss, Calvin Klein, and was also good friends with his wife, Kelly Klein, who was a photographer.
In Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) objects when Calvin tells her she can’t continue working for him because their engagement—publicized by a New York Post cover announcing JFK Jr.’s proposal—is becoming a distraction.
Kelly retorted, “Honestly, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets,” and Calvin replied, “You’ve known the deal since day one.”
The designer then invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, hinting that it would be their last time together – a clear sign they were breaking up.
Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and decided to live apart while continuing to treat each other with respect, hoping to resolve any differences. Their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.
At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than Calvin.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features Cindy Crawford playfully dressed as George Washington.
I saw it all unfold on TV, and honestly, it broke my heart. She had to let him deny the proposal, even though I know she was probably dying inside. If the rumors about her rejecting him had stuck, it would’ve completely overshadowed the amazing George news, and she couldn’t let that happen. It was so selfless, even if it killed her to do it. I just know how much she cares.
Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for downplaying rumors about John’s relationship status after a photo of Carolyn’s ring surfaced, stated that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be a distraction, and that she didn’t mind not being there.
John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff believed this was an early indication of what their relationship would be like – a pattern of him controlling the narrative and dismissing her feelings.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with Carolyn happily accepting John’s marriage proposal, despite their earlier argument.
The highly publicized fight between the couple on February 25, 1996, became famous for several dramatic moments – John appearing to take Carolyn’s engagement ring off her finger, him crying on the curb, and a heated argument where Carolyn famously declared, “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!” These details were widely reported and instantly recognizable to the public.
The show centers around an argument stemming from John’s rejected proposal—he angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d simply accepted it—even though they’d actually been engaged for around five months. While Carolyn privately tries on the ring and seems open to the idea of marriage, she hadn’t formally said yes before the fight began.
In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because John’s friends were taking advantage of him.
At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the “Vows” column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she had been trying to shield him from being exploited.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.
That scene played well on television, but in real life, John was often forgetful, frequently misplacing his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.
Beyond hinting at things to come, John also failed to mention a key detail when he invited Carolyn to a party: it wasn’t just a casual get-together, but a formal birthday dinner for his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.
When Carolyn expresses concern, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that John often forgets things, and she didn’t mean to imply he was bringing women home unexpectedly.

According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday – November 27, 1994. The event, held at Carolyn’s apartment on Park Avenue, was more of a party than a formal dinner.
The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was happy to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the secure room looking glowing and unapologetically herself, and acting very warmly and spontaneously.
Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a warm, “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.
Contrary to initial impressions, Carolyn and Caroline actually hit it off immediately, according to Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time. Someone who saw them having lunch described them as genuinely enjoying each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to arrange a meeting with him because she was interested in a relationship. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was upset he’d believe such a thing, so she left.
After what felt like a long time, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.
According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining rumors about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships, but it happened early in their dating history. The book states that after dating in the summer of 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading the letter, and Carolyn didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

The new series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette opens with Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advising Annette Bening (portrayed by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.
It’s unknown if she created that outfit for Annette Bening, who later married Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was Calvin Klein’s main stylist for famous clients, including Diane Sawyer and Blaire Trump.
According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she expertly helped customers choose clothes, offering styling advice and suggesting complete outfits. He said this talent led to millions of dollars in clothing sales over the years.
In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her marketing skills by advising Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.
Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give him her phone number, reminding him that he can easily reach her at work.
“He was simply bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, who they playfully called the “sexy doorman” (and was actually Noah Fearnley), joined them.
John suddenly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.
According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. John was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. He then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, according to her friend MJ Bettenhausen, who spoke with Beller. However, Carolyn initially thought another woman was John’s date, so she declined his invitation to an after-party.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was mostly on-and-off, according to Beller’s book.
According to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted Bergin’s assertion in his 2004 book, The Other Man, that he continued a sexual relationship with her – not only after she met John, but throughout the rest of her life.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. She’s about to leave after waiting for twenty minutes when he finally arrives, riding up on his bicycle.
He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they returned from their long date, it was gone. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.
He said he wished he hadn’t felt so rushed as they reached her door. She asked what he meant, and he leaned in to kiss her. As the moment ended, he wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d really enjoyed their evening before saying goodnight.
In real life, John and this person likely had a first date, and it’s possible John biked there and was a little late. However, the image of them connecting over drinks was probably staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) is at John’s apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen), that he really wants to call Carolyn.
He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, being strongly against it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers from a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.
John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and finally confessed to her at an event that he was struggling because she disliked him. Carolyn responded by saying she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.
The unexpected meeting was a striking way to introduce the star of Splash in Love Story. However, the producers didn’t consult Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they aim to deeply understand the motivations of their characters. She noted that focusing on external expectations or ‘agendas’ can be difficult when trying to portray real people authentically, so they generally avoid doing so except in unusual circumstances.
According to Jacobson, Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story is trying to achieve, but the writers still acknowledge her deep understanding of the celebrity lifestyle, something Carolyn lacks.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, pushing him to think about what he truly desires.
Daryl promised she would return for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, he was distracted by a fan asking for an autograph. He accidentally dropped the leash, and tragically, Hank was struck and killed by a taxi. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.
According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, shared that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic and was hit by a car while they were walking in Central Park in May 1994.
According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly declined. He felt very angry that Daryl had insisted he attend the dog’s funeral when his mother was seriously ill with cancer.
In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, then collapses at home. This scene was created for dramatic impact, but it’s also meant to emphasize how seriously ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.
They connected immediately and dated all summer, but then drifted apart for nearly two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie passed away that they finally became a lasting couple.
