While everyone anticipates Grogu’s first movie appearance, other exciting possibilities are brewing in the Star Wars universe. A new character named Devon Izara is appearing in the upcoming Maul: Shadow Lord series, and some fans believe she might be a reimagining of the popular Legends character, Darth Talon. This could potentially set her up as a future adversary for Rey Skywalker, years down the line, as Rey’s own movie is still being developed.
Darth Talon was a skilled Sith assassin who appeared after the Empire’s defeat, and notably adopted a similar look to Darth Maul. She rose to power within a newly formed Sith Empire. Many fans believe the upcoming comic series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will draw inspiration from Talon’s story with its new character, Devon, and this could have significant implications for the wider Star Wars universe.
George Lucas Had Big Plans for Darth Talon and Maul Before 2012
Before Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, George Lucas had planned a sequel trilogy centered around a character named Talon. The story would have featured an older Darth Maul, but Talon was intended to be the main hero and drive most of the action, while Maul would have been a looming, powerful presence in the background.
Originally, the story planned for clashes with Leia and a character named Talon. However, when J.J. Abrams became director, those plans were abandoned. Elements of Talon’s story still appear in the character of Kylo Ren, but she was largely forgotten when Disney revised the established storyline. Many fans would like to see her story revisited.
This leads us to consider Maul: Shadow Lord. Given that trailers for the new show feature Maul with a young Twi’lek apprentice, the connection is clear. The show’s creator has a long history with Lucas and consistently pays tribute to his vision in all of their Star Wars work.
Many fans expect Devon to become the new Talon, which would fulfill some of Lucas’s original ideas. This could also create an interesting direction for the sequels, potentially pitting Devon, as Talon, against Rey’s Jedi Order after the First Order is defeated.
Rey’s Movie Needs a New Threat to the Jedi Order
Lucasfilm is currently making a film about Rey Skywalker’s future as a Jedi Master. As the new leader of the Jedi Order, she’s tasked with shaping its direction, but the Order also needs a new enemy – one that isn’t the First Order.
People have suggested ideas like pirates or completely new concepts for Star Wars, and a new Sith Lord is always a welcome addition, particularly if it connects to existing stories. While there’s a significant gap in the timeline between Maul’s appearance and Rey’s movie, that doesn’t prevent characters from appearing in multiple stories. Twi’leks generally live longer than most species in the Star Wars universe, but that’s insignificant compared to the power of the Dark Side.
Fans learned that Sith Lords can extend their lives beyond what’s natural. It would be great if Lucasfilm explored George Lucas’ idea of an older Darth Maul with a young student, and applied it to Devon and Talon in a new story set in the Jedi universe. This dynamic would be similar to Maul’s relationship with Ezra Bridger, but could pose a much greater threat to Rey.
As a Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about how to build on the Skywalker saga, and I truly believe a character like Talon would be incredible opposite Rey. Imagine a seasoned, powerful figure who constantly challenges Rey, pushing her – and any Jedi she trains – to reach their full potential. It would be fascinating to see that dynamic play out. And honestly, if we ever get a film exploring the search for Ben Solo, bringing Talon into the mix and utilizing her original backstory to influence and even corrupt Ben… now that would be a story worth telling.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Can Connect to Rey’s Movie
The upcoming movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is generating a lot of excitement, and Lucasfilm recognizes its potential. The trailer hints that Grogu will live for centuries, far outliving both Din Djarin and Rey Skywalker. This longevity positions Grogu as a character who could connect many different periods within the Star Wars universe. This idea could also apply to the characters Devon and Talon.
Based on what viewers have seen, Devon seems to have received some Jedi training and even possesses a lightsaber. Since the show takes place immediately after the fall of the Republic, she might have been a Jedi herself. It would be really interesting to see Devon and this other survivor of the Jedi Order continue to cross paths over the years, both becoming more powerful and searching for others who share their background.
Grogu could mentor Rey, while Devon might try to turn her apprentice towards the dark side and greater power. This conflict would be an exciting development for fans. Utilizing Grogu’s long life to add layers to the Star Wars universe is a great way to enrich the story.
It seems unlikely that Maul: Shadow Lord, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the upcoming Rey movie will all connect through shared characters. We don’t yet know much about the character Devon, but it’s exciting to imagine her potential role in the Star Wars universe. She could even become the character George Lucas originally envisioned for Talon, creating a compelling and memorable challenge for Rey – possibly with Grogu’s assistance.
