Paul McCartney debuts brand new single on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Merseyside

Paul McCartney has released a new song, ‘Days We Left Behind,’ which is his first in six years.

The new song premiered today on Radio Merseyside, giving people in the Beatles’ hometown – and Paul McCartney’s birthplace – the first listen.

During his appearance on BBC Radio 2’s The Afternoon Show with Trevor Nelson, the Beatles legend revealed that the song is part of his new studio album, called The Boys of Dungeon Lane.

The station played a message from Paul McCartney explaining the story behind his new song. He said the lyrics reflect on his childhood in Liverpool and his memories of John Lennon.

“So this next song is very much a memory song for me,” McCartney said.

I was reflecting during an interview yesterday about where songwriters and writers get their inspiration. Beyond drawing from past experiences, what other sources can they use? While writing about the present is an option, it often still relies heavily on memories and the past.

Looking back, Liverpool holds a lot of memories for me. A big part of that is remembering John and Forthlin Road, the street where I grew up.

He explained that he grew up in Speke, a working-class area, and now realizes they didn’t have a lot growing up.

Despite any difficulties, the wonderful people around made things feel alright, and any lack of possessions didn’t seem to matter.
