GSC Game World has officially revealed “STALKER 2: Cost of Hope,” a large new story expansion for their popular game. The downloadable content will add many hours of gameplay and will be available on all versions of STALKER 2 in the summer of 2026.
The recent announcement wasn’t a surprise, considering STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl released in November 2024 with a season pass. This pass, included in the $109.99 Ultimate Edition, guaranteed all future content, including two story expansions. While the open-world shooter-RPG has received several major updates since launch, GSC Game World hadn’t revealed details about those expansions until today.
STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Announced with a Dramatic Trailer
Just announced during the Xbox Partner Preview event, the first major story expansion for STALKER 2, titled ‘Cost of Hope’, will reignite the conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions. A new two-minute trailer showed both cinematic scenes and gameplay, hinting that the fragile peace between these two groups will fall apart, throwing players into the resulting turmoil. The ‘Cost of Hope’ expansion promises a new story centered around this renewed conflict within the Zone.

Okay, so the Zone is already pretty massive, but the ‘Cost of Hope’ expansion is going to make it even bigger! They’re adding two new areas up north: the actual Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and this place called the Iron Forest. The trailer showed some footage that looks like it was filmed inside the plant, but they’re not saying why we’re going there yet. Each new area will have its own little base and quests, plus some other stuff they’re keeping secret for now. And yeah, we’re getting new weapons and gear too, though they haven’t said exactly how much new stuff there will be.
STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Summary
- Release window: summer 2026
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
- 2 new regions: Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest
- Each region comes with its own hub and quests
- New weapons and gear
- Non-linear story: player choices shape the narrative
According to GSC, the ‘Cost of Hope’ expansion will progress alongside the main story of the game. After downloading and installing the expansion, Skif will receive a new quest on his PDA, starting the DLC’s storyline. Like the rest of the game, ‘Cost of Hope’ will be open-ended, meaning your choices will impact the story and encourage multiple playthroughs. While GSC hasn’t confirmed if decisions made in the main game will affect the expansion, it seems unlikely since they both happen at the same time.
STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Launches Summer 2026
The developers are aiming to release the STALKER 2: Cost of Hope expansion in the summer of 2026, as shown at the end of the reveal trailer. While the base STALKER 2 game initially launched only on Xbox and PC, this expansion will be available on all platforms – including PlayStation 5 – at the same time. GSC Game World hasn’t announced the price yet, but the cost of an upgrade to the game’s Ultimate Edition suggests the expansion might sell for around $20. It’s common for season passes to offer a discount compared to buying each expansion separately. GSC hasn’t confirmed if Cost of Hope will be available as a standalone purchase.
GSC Game World considers STALKER 2: Cost of Hope the second part of a planned three-part story arc that began with the base STALKER 2 game. They intend to finish the story with another expansion, though its name and release date are currently unknown. Considering Cost of Hope is expected to launch almost two years after STALKER 2, the final expansion might not be released until 2028. While a two-year wait for downloadable content is significant, GSC emphasizes that Cost of Hope will offer many hours of gameplay – more akin to a full game than a typical expansion.
