Owlcat Games’ new game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, is based on a science fiction series known for its realistic approach. This means traveling through space will take a significant amount of time. However, according to game design director Leonid Rastorguev, players won’t have to actively manage time during these long journeys. Instead, they’ll be able to observe what’s happening aboard their ship while traveling between planets.
According to Rastorguev, the world of The Expanse is built on realism and scientific accuracy, which creates challenges for the creative team. When designing new technology or gadgets, they have to ensure everything aligns with current scientific understanding, and they often consult with scientists to verify their ideas.
Rastorguev explained that players will experience the feeling of time passing while traveling on their ship, as journeys between planets can take days, weeks, or even months. They’ll see cutscenes showing what their crew is doing during these long voyages, giving a glimpse into their daily lives.
He explained that travel in The Expanse often takes a significant amount of time – days, weeks, or even months. However, the game won’t include a system for managing time. Instead, they’ll convey the feeling of long journeys through the game’s atmosphere and by showing snippets of life aboard the ship. Players will see short scenes depicting everyday activities like people talking, eating, and working out, all to create a sense of immersion and the passage of time.
The game will include explanations of how space travel functions within the world of The Expanse.
Over the past few days, the developers have shared several updates about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. We recently saw a preview of the characters players will encounter and be able to team up with. A new trailer also revealed the game is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027. Additionally, Owlcat Games announced that a closed beta will be available starting April 22nd for players who purchase the Miller’s Pack.
So, I just heard from the studio that they are using AI in development, which is kinda interesting. Apparently, it’s only happening in the early phases – things like quickly making prototypes and temporary stuff to fill things out. The good news is they’ve said all that AI-generated content will be replaced with stuff made by actual artists before the game is released, so we’re not getting an AI-made game!
We mainly use it for technical experimentation – things like visualizing a 2D image in 3D or testing different color schemes to see what works best. It helps us quickly refine our ideas. However, we aren’t using it for writing or creating voices; everything you’ll see in the final product will be entirely created by humans.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
