The initial trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter TV series has been well-received, successfully capturing the enchanting atmosphere of the Wizarding World. However, the show faces a challenge as its 2026 release date nears. The incredibly popular Harry Potter films cast a long shadow, as they remain highly influential for many viewers and continue to be beloved. Visually, the TV series closely resembles the films, so it will need to establish a unique style to stand on its own.
The new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series hopes to be a more complete version of the book, bringing back scenes and characters that weren’t in the films. A new musical score by Hans Zimmer will also help the show stand on its own. While the trailer featured some promising musical moments as viewers revisited Hogwarts, the official Harry Potter website confirms we haven’t heard the full score yet, suggesting HBO is keeping the best part of the series under wraps for now.
John Williams’ Harry Potter Scores Elevated the Films

The actors chosen for HBO’s new Harry Potter series have a big challenge: living up to the beloved performances from the original films. Those actors are so strongly associated with their characters that it’s hard for fans to picture anyone else in the roles. But composer Hans Zimmer might face an even greater hurdle. He’s following in the footsteps of John Williams, who created the music for the first three Harry Potter movies and even received Oscar nominations for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Though John Williams stopped composing music for the Harry Potter films after the third installment, his iconic themes continued to define the series’ sound. His composition, “Hedwig’s Theme,” effectively became the main theme song, appearing in various forms at the beginning of most of the eight films. Harry Potter joined the long list of blockbuster movies instantly recognizable thanks to Williams’ music, including classics like Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, E.T., Jurassic Park, and many others. Just as he did with those films, Williams’ scores for Harry Potter significantly enhanced the movies, giving them a magical quality that fully immersed audiences in the wizarding world.
The Harry Potter films were successful for many reasons – great actors, beautiful sets, and, importantly, John Williams’ incredible music, which made each film feel like a special occasion. It’s hard to see the Harry Potter logo without humming “Hedwig’s Theme,” so Hans Zimmer faces a challenge with the HBO series. He needs to create a soundtrack that feels right for the show but doesn’t simply copy Williams’ work, allowing the new series to have its own unique musical identity. Luckily, Zimmer has tackled this before. He composed the music for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, successfully putting his own spin on the Superman story. That soundtrack is also very memorable and, like Williams’ best scores, makes the film’s most exciting moments even more powerful – think of Superman’s first flight.
Even though John Williams is so closely linked to the world of Harry Potter now, Hans Zimmer could also become strongly associated with the franchise. Ludwig Göransson’s work on Star Wars shows this is possible. Göransson, like Zimmer, had a challenging job when composing music for shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but his themes are now just as iconic as Williams’ traditional scores. A well-established series can evolve its musical style over time. Zimmer might be influenced by Williams while creating the Harry Potter score—similar to how the newer Star Wars music builds on Williams’ legacy—but he’ll also bring his own unique approach to keep things fresh and engaging.
