Later this year, movie fans can look forward to a big showdown at the box office between Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. Some are even calling December 18, 2026, “Dunesday” because both of these highly anticipated films are scheduled for release on that date.
The Avengers films have all been incredibly successful, and Doomsday is expected to follow suit. It’s shaping up to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s largest team-up yet, uniting characters from across the Marvel multiverse, including the X-Men. At the same time, Dune 3 will finish the story started by Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, and the initial trailer suggests a grand finale.
While two movies are predicted to be box office hits, a new film could also become a strong competitor. “Jumanji 4” has been scheduled for release on December 25, 2026, and previous films in the series have shown they can perform just as well as other major releases.
Jumanji Has Performed Well Against Other Major Franchises
The 1995 film Jumanji, starring Robin Williams, features players who have to complete a board game while its dangers spill into the real world. Over two decades later, in 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the game reappeared as a video game, pulling players into a perilous jungle setting.
The movie featured Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black playing versions of themselves within the game’s world. It came out in cinemas on December 20, 2017, just five days after Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi was released.
Despite the release of successful Star Wars films, other movies have also achieved significant box office success. The Last Jedi earned over $1.3 billion, but Welcome to the Jungle still grossed over $962 million worldwide while it was in theaters. Similarly, Jumanji: The Next Level proved to be a hit, even though it came out around the same time as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Despite competition from the huge Star Wars franchise, the Jumanji movies have continued to perform well in theaters. The Next Level made approximately $801.7 million globally, and The Rise of Skywalker earned $1.07 billion worldwide, demonstrating Jumanji’s continued box office success.
Family-Friendly Films Tend To Perform Well At The Box Office Around Christmas
The recent Jumanji movies are rated PG-13, but they’re generally suitable for families. They’re filled with fun action and lively comedy, making them great choices for families during the holidays – a time when family movies are always popular.
Recent films like 2023’s Wonka ($634.5 million worldwide) and 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King ($722.6 million worldwide) have been very successful. Jumanji 4 is geared towards families, which might attract a broader audience than Dune 3. Plus, the previous Jumanji movies have outperformed the recent Dune films at the box office.
The recent Avengers movies each made over $2 billion globally, so it will be challenging for Jumanji 4 to outperform Doomsday in theaters. This is partly because Marvel films attract a lot of families. While Doomsday and Dune 3 are expected to be big hits, Jumanji 4 still has the potential to be a strong contender at the box office.
