The crime thriller Scarpetta, currently ranking third on Amazon Prime Video’s most-watched list, is a compelling watch. Starring Nicole Kidman and Rosy McEwen as different ages of medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the eight-episode season is perfect for a cozy binge-watching session. While the show, which also features Bobby Cannavale and Jamie Lee Curtis, has a lot going for it, another similar thriller from five years ago is arguably even better.
The first season of Cruel Summer debuted on Freeform in April 2021, immediately captivating audiences with its intriguing and complex story about the intertwined lives of two young women. Despite many new shows appearing during the pandemic, this thriller stood out and unfortunately, was overlooked by many viewers. While the second season continues to explore themes of identity, social status, and the impact of lies, the first season remains particularly impactful even years later.
Why ‘Cruel Summer’ Is Better Than ‘Scarpetta’

The first season of Cruel Summer unfolds across three different time periods, immediately grabbing your attention. In 1993, we meet Jeannette Turner, a high schooler in Skylin, Texas, who idolizes the popular Kate Wallis. A year later, in 1994, Kate vanishes, and the mystery behind her disappearance begins to surface. Finally, in 1995, Jeannette is facing intense public hatred and a bitter legal battle with Kate.
Though Lost remains the gold standard for shows that skillfully use flashbacks, Cruel Summer is a strong contender. Scarpetta also employs this technique, but it’s often criticized because the storylines in the past and present aren’t equally engaging. Viewers may find young Kay’s earlier life more compelling, as she appears more dynamic and involved in her own story.
As a film and TV lover, I have to say the way Cruel Summer jumps between three different timelines isn’t just a stylistic choice, it’s genuinely clever. Shows like Scarpetta could probably get away with sticking to just the past or present, filling in the gaps as needed. But with Jeanette and Kate’s story? It needs those three perspectives. It’s what makes their story so compelling and keeps you hooked, because seeing events unfold from different points in time is absolutely crucial to understanding everything.
Jeanette and Kate are more complicated characters than Kay. They aren’t always easy to root for, and they frequently make poor choices. However, the show makes us understand their struggles and feel for them. Kate’s storyline is especially powerful and emotionally challenging. It’s more than just the typical story of a privileged, emotionally neglected character. The reasons behind Kate’s disappearance are surprisingly complex, and the show handles this sensitive topic with care.
‘Cruel Summer’ Has Better Twists and Turns Than ‘Scarpetta’
While Scarpetta’s first season ends with a bit of a surprise, it generally follows a standard crime show format. You can always be sure Kay will figure things out, no matter what challenges she faces. Cruel Summer Season 1, however, is full of unexpected turns, and it keeps you guessing about the characters and why they do what they do. The show’s suspenseful atmosphere remains effective even now.
From the very beginning, the show raises a lot of questions. Why do Kate and Jeanette dislike each other so intensely? Is Jeanette hiding something? And who exactly is Annabelle, a name mentioned repeatedly throughout the series?
Watching Scarpetta really highlights the interesting themes in Cruel Summer. Both shows explore crime, deception—both of others and self-deception—and how our childhood experiences shape who we become. But Cruel Summer takes it a step further by focusing on two characters who are far more complex than they appear.
