Throughout the DC Universe, many heroes have temporarily wielded the power of a Lantern ring, thanks to the Green Lanterns and the emergence of other corps. Before different emotional energies came into play, only Green Lanterns usually had access to these powerful rings. However, with groups like the Red Lanterns and the Indigo Tribe appearing, it became more common for other heroes to experience Lantern-like abilities, even if just for a short time.
As a huge DC fan, I always found it fascinating when heroes outside the usual Lanterns got their hands on a ring! During the Blackest Night event, it happened a lot! Like, the Atom became an Indigo Tribe member because he’s just such a compassionate guy. Green Arrow grabbed a ring when he really needed a boost, and it was wild to see. Poor Supergirl didn’t even realize what was happening when she suddenly became a Red Lantern! Seriously, so many DC heroes have worn a Lantern ring at some point. I’ve put together a list of 10 of them, and it’s really cool to see how they dealt with those unexpected powers!
10. Red Lantern Lobo

That’s right, Lobo actually owned a Red Lantern ring at one point. You might be asking why he doesn’t wear the red and spew acid like the other Red Lanterns. The reason is that, during the “Brightest Day” storyline, Atrocitus, the leader of the Red Lanterns, hired Lobo to do something that would earn the trust of certain heroes. As payment, Lobo received a Red Lantern Power Ring, which he wore as a necklace. However, he never used the ring, so it didn’t add to his abilities, which is why he’s at the bottom of this list.
9. Green Lantern Green Arrow

Given his history as a friend to Green Lantern, it wasn’t surprising when Green Arrow briefly wielded a Power Ring. This happened during the major storyline Green Lantern: Rebirth, while he and Kyle Rayner were battling Sinestro. Green Arrow managed to grab a ring, charge it with his willpower, and even shoot an arrow at Sinestro. While Sinestro was correct that Oliver’s cynicism limited the ring’s potential, Green Arrow demonstrated he has considerable willpower when it truly matters.
8. Indigo Tribe Atom

During the Blackest Night event, the Atom was one of the few individuals temporarily given the authority to act as a member of the various Lantern Corps. The Indigo Tribe’s ring chose Ray Palmer because of his deep empathy, and he quickly adapted to their power. He successfully avoided zombified versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl and even managed to use the abilities of other Lantern Corps. However, the Indigo power source is one of the weakest in the Emotional Spectrum, so Ray didn’t gain the same level of strength as some other heroes. Despite this, he used the Indigo Tribe’s power effectively and survived the crisis.
7. Sinestro Corps Batman

During the Sinestro Corps War, fans joked about seeing Batman as a Yellow Lantern. That finally happened in Forever Evil, where Bruce Wayne revealed he’d secretly kept a yellow power ring. He used it to fight an evil version of Green Lantern from another Earth. While the ring didn’t have much power and couldn’t seriously hurt the villain, Batman quickly mastered its abilities. This makes sense, considering the yellow ring draws power from fear – something Batman understands well. It was a shame he couldn’t accomplish more with it, though.
6. White Lantern Deadman

During the Blackest Night event, many heroes were resurrected, but Deadman was unique – he received a White Lantern Power Ring. At the time, the full potential of these rings was unknown, and surprisingly, Deadman wasn’t particularly interested in exploring it. He did learn the ring could heal injuries and even bring people back from the dead. Ultimately, Deadman wasn’t meant to be the ring’s permanent owner, but rather a messenger, though he still had some impressive moments while wielding its power.
5. Star Sapphire Green Lantern

It’s surprising to learn that John Stewart, typically associated with the Green Lantern Corps, once became a Star Sapphire. This happened during the “Godhead” storyline when John, along with other Lanterns and the Zamarons, was captured by Shadowfall. Briefly, he used a Star Sapphire ring, channeling his emotional connection to those he cared about, to break free. While not a grand romantic gesture, it was effective and demonstrated that John is just as capable with love as he is with willpower.
4. Green Lantern Kid Flash

The Flash & Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold miniseries focused on the beginning of the friendship between Barry Allen and Hal Jordan, and also showed a unique period in Wally West’s life. After losing his super speed due to a scheme by Mirror Master and Black Hand, Wally received help from Green Lantern, who created a Power Ring specifically for him, transforming Kid Flash into Kid Lantern. Wally quickly mastered his new Lantern abilities, easily creating constructs and flying with minimal guidance from Hal. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of this Kid Lantern phase.
3. Blue Lantern Flash

Like other heroes, the Flash has also become a Lantern. During the ‘Blackest Night’ event, Barry Allen received a boost from a Blue Lantern Power Ring. This happened because of his strong hope in his friends, which naturally attracted the ring to him. While Blue Lanterns aren’t the strongest, the ring significantly increased the Flash’s speed and made it easier for him to defeat the Black Lanterns. Being near Green Lanterns, like Hal Jordan, made the Blue Lantern’s power even stronger, giving the Flash one of his most impressive and visually striking power-ups in DC Comics.
2. Red Lantern Supergirl

Honestly, it still blows my mind thinking about when Supergirl became a Red Lantern! The ‘Red Daughter of Krypton’ storyline was just incredible. She finally gave in to her anger, and a Red Lantern ring latched onto her, unlocking a seriously powerful version of herself. It was scary seeing her so uninhibited, even after she regained control of her mind. She had the raw strength of a Kryptonian combined with the full, destructive force of a Red Lantern. It wasn’t a long run, but that period as a Red Lantern really stuck with me – it was a defining moment for her, and for a good reason!
1. White Lantern Green Lantern

Interestingly, Kyle is one of the rare heroes who didn’t receive a Power Ring to gain his abilities. He actually learned to control the White Lantern’s powers through his own efforts. Becoming the White Lantern made him significantly more powerful, granting him access to the full range of emotions – the Emotional Spectrum – and all the unique abilities of the White Light. Even though he’s no longer permanently connected to the White Light, he can still draw on its immense power from time to time to rescue his friends when they’re in trouble.
