As a Switch fan, I was pretty bummed to find out that two games have been removed from the eShop – meaning you can’t buy them anymore, even if you’re thinking about a Switch 2! Luckily, if you already own them, you can still play for now, but that’s about to change. One of the games is going offline in June, and when that happens, it’ll be totally unplayable because it only worked online – there’s no offline mode at all. The other delisted game will shut down later this summer, and it’ll become inaccessible too when that happens. It’s a shame to see games disappear like this!
Two Nintendo Switch games are being removed, one of which is Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Originally released in 2021, it only came to the Switch in 2023 as a cloud-based game. This means even though it has some offline content, the Switch version always required an internet connection. Now, the game is being removed from the eShop and will become unplayable shortly after its three-year anniversary on August 5th. It’s being delisted because the servers are shutting down, but the reason for this isn’t clear. Cold Iron Studios hasn’t explained why, though it likely comes down to the cost of maintaining the servers being higher than the game’s profits on Switch, or a licensing issue that wasn’t worth renewing.
Two Nintendo Switch Games Delisted and Shutting Down
Another Nintendo Switch game recently removed from the eShop is The Elder Scrolls Blades, a free-to-play action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It’s a spin-off title in The Elder Scrolls series and was primarily available on Nintendo Switch, though it also launched on iOS and Android. The Elder Scrolls: Blades will stop working shortly before Aliens: Fireteam Elite, with servers shutting down on June 30th.
Although unrelated, both game shutdowns have one thing in common: the developers haven’t explained why they’re happening. Aliens: Fireteam Elite is only being removed from Nintendo Switch, while The Elder Scrolls: Blades is being completely taken down on all platforms.
Players on Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 can no longer buy these games. However, if you already own them digitally, you’ll still be able to download and play them for a limited time. Currently, refunds aren’t being offered, and it’s unlikely any will be provided due to the reasons for the games being removed.
