The next installment in Sydney Sweeney’s hit thriller series is scheduled to come out in December 2025. The first film finally gave the Euphoria star a successful movie franchise to be a part of.
I’m so excited! Lionsgate didn’t waste any time and has officially announced a sequel to the movie! We’re getting The Housemaid’s Secret in theaters on December 17, 2027, before it hits Starz. I can’t wait!
The Housemaid Was a Success
The new movie is coming out nearly two years after the first one, and it’s also based on books by Freida McFadden. The Housemaid first hit theaters on December 19, 2025, and after a strong run in cinemas, it became available for streaming on February 3rd – just 46 days later. It quickly rose to the top of the charts and stayed there for weeks, outperforming new releases like Zootopia 2, Anaconda, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme.
Sydney Sweeney quickly became famous after appearing in a popular role, and Hollywood immediately took notice. She starred in the hit 2023 romantic comedy Anyone but You, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Unfortunately, her streak of success ended in early February with the release of Madame Web, a superhero film that was a major box office disappointment.
Despite receiving more acting opportunities, Sweeney experienced a string of unsuccessful films. Her 2023 neo-Western, Americana, wasn’t released until 2025 and unfortunately earned only about $500,000 at the box office, far short of its $9 million production cost.
Sweeney appeared in Ron Howard’s film Eden, alongside Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, and Ana de Armas. Although the movie had a famous cast, it received average reviews and earned $55 million at the box office on a $2.5 million budget. Her biopic about Christy Martin, simply titled Christy, only made $2 million despite costing $15 million to produce. Both films were considered box office failures, released in the same year.
Things changed for her with the movie The Housemaid. Because Freida McFadden already had a dedicated readership, the film adaptation, directed by Paul Feig, stayed very close to the book, which helped draw audiences to cinemas. During its time in theaters, The Housemaid earned $395 million globally on a $35 million budget, making it the most successful project for both Sweeney and Feig.
The movie adaptation was well-received by both general audiences and fans of the book. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating with a 73% score based on 198 critic reviews, and even higher praise from viewers, who gave it a 92% rating. It also earned a ‘Verified Hot’ badge on the site.
The Housemaid’s Secret premieres in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
