Fans have noticed that The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, doesn’t appear in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. While the new season features a larger cast – including additions like Matthew Lillard and Krysten Ritter – Bernthal’s absence has led to questions about the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I was really loving the positive buzz around Daredevil: Born Again season 2, but I have to say, I’m pretty bummed that Frank Castle, The Punisher, isn’t around. After that awesome team-up between Daredevil and him in season 1, taking down Kingpin and his task force, I was really hoping to see more of that morally complex dynamic. His absence is a real letdown!
Although previously expected, The Punisher won’t be featured in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. This has led to speculation about the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fortunately, an upcoming Marvel film and other plans for the franchise will clarify the situation.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 3 Teases Where The Punisher Is
I was really curious about why Frank Castle, The Punisher, wasn’t around in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. The show actually addresses it briefly! In episode 3, Matt and Karen are chatting about everything happening with their fight against Fisk, and they specifically mention The Punisher – it’s a little nod to where he is, or isn’t, at that time.
The story confirms Frank Castle, the Punisher, is still operating in New York City, dispensing his own form of justice to criminals. This probably includes targeting the task force trying to stop vigilantes, even if he isn’t actively helping Matt and Karen fight against Fisk right now.
This hint, along with other details from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, strongly suggests where the Punisher will appear and where his story will unfold – likely, but not necessarily, in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
The Punisher: One Last Kill Will Tell Frank Castle’s Next Story
Following the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel announced a Disney+ special to continue The Punisher’s storyline. While working on Born Again, Jon Bernthal developed a new idea for Frank Castle’s story that he believed deserved to be told. Marvel Studios liked his vision, and he began collaborating with director Reinaldo Marcus Green to make it happen.
As a huge fan of these characters, I was thrilled to hear that Frank Castle’s story isn’t over! Apparently, the writers, Green and Bernthal, teamed up to create this new one-hour special called The Punisher: One Last Kill. It’s coming to Disney+ on May 12th, just a week after the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again, and it sounds like it’ll give us a proper conclusion to Frank’s journey.
The new special centers around Frank Castle attempting to leave his life of revenge behind. However, he’s quickly pulled into a new, unforeseen problem. The story will explore Frank’s ongoing struggle to balance his sense of morality with what he feels he must do.
While the first season of Daredevil: Born Again doesn’t reveal Frank’s location, a special extra episode will provide those answers.
Jon Bernthal Was Too Busy For Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
The upcoming seasons of Daredevil: Born Again and The Punisher: One Last Kill will reveal what Frank Castle is currently up to within the Marvel universe. The reason Jon Bernthal wasn’t in Born Again is simply that he had other commitments and wasn’t available during filming.
I was so excited for season 2 of Born Again, but I learned it was a really tough shoot! Filming happened between February and July 2025, right when Jon Bernthal was filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey all over Europe – places like Morocco, Scotland, Italy, Iceland, and even Greece. It basically meant he couldn’t be in Born Again even if he’d wanted to, which is a shame, but I understand he had commitments elsewhere.
Following that, Jon Bernthal immediately began filming The Punisher: One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, shooting both projects consecutively. A trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day included footage of Bernthal as The Punisher, which helped soften the blow for fans who were upset about his lack of involvement in the second season of Born Again.
Honestly, while I was bummed to hear Jon Bernthal might not be back for Born Again season 2, I’m kind of thrilled with what he is doing instead! The Odyssey looks amazing and is already one of my most anticipated films for 2026, and I’m equally excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But the best part? Finally seeing Daredevil and Spider-Man actually share a universe after years of fans wanting it? That’s a dream come true!
The new comic, The Punisher: One Last Kill, is a great addition to what’s already shaping up to be a thrilling future for Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans were initially let down that The Punisher wasn’t involved in season two of Daredevil: Born Again, it’s clear his story isn’t over and will lead to exciting things.
