The upcoming PS5 Power Save feature, included in the next system update, adds credibility to rumors about a potential handheld device launching alongside the future PS6 console.
Today, it was announced that Sony is currently trialing a Power Saving Mode for the PS5. When activated by users, this feature will adjust the console’s performance, leading to a decrease in power usage.
Last month, there were rumors suggesting that a lower bandwidth mode might be introduced by Sony, allegedly allowing PS5 games to run more efficiently on their handheld system. However, Sony has only officially confirmed that the Power Save mode is part of their initiative towards achieving “carbon neutrality.
If the rumored PS6 handheld device indeed has a hidden secondary function, then the power-saving mode mentioned earlier has officially been confirmed.
Based on rumors, it’s speculated that the PS6 handheld might be capable of running present PS5 games at reduced resolutions and frame rates. However, it could potentially leverage the PSSR upscaling feature, which is available on the PS5 Pro. It seems that developers have an unofficial target to consider if they aim to support this rumored device, given the new PS5 Power Save mode. Essentially, the PS6 handheld is thought of as a next-generation iteration of current PC handhelds such as the ROG Xbox Ally X.
The Verge notes that this feature aligns with Sony’s environmental pledges, but it could also serve as a precursor to encourage game developers to consider adding additional game modes. This could be particularly relevant if Sony is planning a portable PS5 console, which would enable playing PS5 games on the go.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the PS6, but it seems like I might have a bit of a wait ahead; Mark Cerny, the mastermind behind PlayStation system architecture, has hinted that his development plans for the next-gen console stretch over several years.
