Gwyneth Paltrow’s much-anticipated new TV adaptation of best-selling memoir gets home with streaming giant

Gwyneth Paltrow will lead a new series coming to Netflix, which is based on a popular memoir. Netflix has secured the rights to adapt the book for television.

The streaming service successfully won the rights to create a show based on Belle Burden’s memoir, Strangers: A Memoir of a Marriage.

Netflix has reportedly made a deal worth at least seven figures to adapt the story for the screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gwyneth Paltrow, the Academy Award-winning actress known for her recent role in Marty Supreme with Timothée Chalamet, will star in and also produce the new project.

I recently read “Strangers,” and it’s a really moving story. It follows a woman named Burden whose life completely turned upside down when her husband of twenty years told her he was leaving – and it happened right at the start of the 2020 pandemic. It’s a memoir about what happened next, and it’s incredibly raw and honest.

Born into a well-off family and growing up in New York, Burden thought her marriage was going well, so she was shocked when her husband unexpectedly filed for divorce.

After her husband unexpectedly left, Burden faced the challenge of starting over and raising her three children on her own.

In 2023, she wrote an essay for The New York Times about her divorce, called ‘Was I Married to a Stranger?’. The essay was so popular it was turned into a podcast episode, and she later expanded it into a full memoir.

Released in January, the memoir When Strangers quickly became a New York Times bestseller and sparked discussions about a potential movie or TV adaptation.

As a film buff, I was really excited to hear that Netflix snagged this project! There was a lot of competition – I heard A24, Warner, Sony, and Amazon were all trying to get it. Right now, though, we don’t have any details on when they’ll start filming or when we can actually expect to see the movie.

In addition to Gwyneth Paltrow’s participation, the script will be penned by playwright Heidi Schreck, and Stacey Sher – known for producing films like Erin Brockovich, Matilda, and Pulp Fiction – will serve as producer.
