Avatar 4 & 5 Get Release Date Update That’s Good & Bad News After Fire & Ash’s Underwhelming Box Office

James Cameron’s Avatar movies have had an unusual financial journey over the last seventeen years. The first Avatar, released in 2009, was a massive surprise hit, earning over $2.74 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film ever. Despite a thirteen-year wait, Avatar: The Way of Water still earned a strong $2.32 billion in 2022, showing continued interest in the world of Pandora. However, the latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, saw a significant drop in earnings, bringing in $1.48 billion – about half of what the original film made. This decline has raised concerns about the future of the franchise.

Producer Rae Sanchini recently told Inverse that they are actively developing a plan for future Avatar films. The team is currently focused on budgeting, scheduling, and establishing a new production process. While Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are currently scheduled for release in December 2029 and December 2031, Sanchini clarified that these dates are still subject to change as the creative team adapts their workflow to handle the ambitious scope of the upcoming movies.

The Future of the Avatar Franchise Seems to Be Assured

The ongoing work on Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 shows that Disney isn’t changing its long-term plans despite Avatar: Fire and Ash not performing as well as expected financially. Even with lower ticket sales, the film still earned over $1 billion worldwide—a rare achievement. Plus, these massive Avatar movies require new visual effects technology that Disney can then use on other big films, helping to offset the extremely high production costs of realizing James Cameron’s creative vision.

Although plans are still uncertain, audiences should be wary of the currently scheduled release dates for the next Avatar movies in 2029 and 2031. Because the studio is still working out the budget and details for the sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 could be delayed. In fact, a delay might actually help Disney. The long thirteen-year wait between the first Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water made the sequel feel like a major event, drawing in viewers eager to see the improved visuals. However, the quick three-year gap between the second and third films lessened the excitement, making the third feel like just another holiday movie. By delaying the fourth and fifth films, 20th Century Studios hopes to build anticipation again, recreating the excitement that surrounded the earlier releases.

The fourth Avatar movie is planned to hit theaters on December 21, 2029, and the fifth installment will follow on December 19, 2031.
