Recent reports suggest we have a better idea of when the Steam Deck 2 might be released. Valve announced in 2023 that they’re working on a new version of the Steam Deck, but emphasized they won’t release it until it offers significant improvements over the original. This led many fans to believe the wait could be lengthy, however, a new report indicates the release might be sooner than expected.
A recent report from KeplerL2, an industry source known for being sometimes accurate and sometimes not, suggests Valve is planning to launch the Steam Deck 2 around 2028. It’s important to remember KeplerL2’s information isn’t always correct, so this release date should be viewed with some skepticism.
Additional Details About Steam Deck 2
According to KeplerL2, the Steam Deck 2 likely won’t use a special, custom-made processor like the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox are expected to. This gives Valve more freedom to improve the Deck 2’s hardware. Essentially, the longer the release is delayed—for example, to 2028 instead of this year—the more powerful and upgraded the new Steam Deck could be, potentially surpassing the PS6 and next Xbox in terms of hardware improvements.
The Steam Deck is still a relatively new device, having launched in 2022. So, a 2028 release for a second version wouldn’t be a long wait. In fact, it would be faster than the six-year gap since the PS6 and next Xbox were released – and faster than we expect for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Right now isn’t a good time to start making a lot of new gaming hardware. The economy is struggling with issues like rising prices, unstable oil costs, a lack of necessary parts, and problems with shipping. Delaying the Steam Deck 2 gives Valve time to see if these issues get better, which could make the new device cheaper and easier to produce. However, it’s a big gamble, as there’s no guarantee things will actually improve.
