A PlayStation 1 RPG from the year 2000 recently saw a surprise new release, 26 years after it first came out. The game series hadn’t been featured in a new installment for over 20 years – the last main game was released in 2002. While there was a free-to-play mobile game in 2016, it was only available in Japan and didn’t last long, so most fans don’t consider it a continuation of the series. Even including that mobile game, it’s been a decade since anything new, meaning this Capcom series has been quiet for a long time.
Capcom unexpectedly released the role-playing game Breath of Fire IV on Steam, having previously launched it on GOG a year ago. The game is available now alongside some classic Resident Evil titles for $9.99, but is currently on sale for just $5 for a limited time.
A Forgotten PS1 RPG
If you haven’t played Breath of Fire IV before, it’s a role-playing game originally released for the PlayStation in 2000. It’s the fourth installment in the Breath of Fire series, which first appeared on the Super Nintendo in 1993. While initially a PlayStation exclusive for three years, it became available on PC in Japan and Europe in 2003 as a physical copy. It wasn’t until 2025 that a digital PC version, and a US PC release, were made possible through a port to GOG. Now, that same version is available on Steam.
It’s still a mystery why Capcom chose to release only the fourth game in the series, as they haven’t explained their plans. However, this installment already had a PC version, making a Steam re-release simpler. It also feels more up-to-date than earlier games, making a modern port more feasible. Plus, many consider it the most accessible and popular entry in the series.
This release probably served as a test for Capcom to see how much interest there is in the RPG series. Essentially, they’re thinking about bringing the series back, but want to make sure there’s enough demand to justify it. It’s currently unknown what they’ve learned from this test.
