
I’ve been so excited for Lee Cronin‘s The Mummy! The trailers have given me chills – it looks like he’s really brought the horror back to this classic monster, aiming for something much darker and more realistic than we’ve seen before. I recently read that Cronin talked about how he approached the story to make it genuinely frightening, and it’s fascinating to learn he drew inspiration from the Fast & Furious franchise to create the scares! It’s a surprising connection, but it sounds like it really fueled the film’s terrifying atmosphere.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Alex Kurtzman shared that he drew inspiration from Dominic Toretto’s focus on family while making The Mummy. While the Fast & Furious movies use family to create emotional connections amid all the action, Kurtzman flipped that idea for horror. He wanted to create a sense of security with family relationships, then subvert the audience’s expectations by contrasting that warmth with the film’s supernatural and frightening elements, ultimately tapping into universal human anxieties.
Family is at the heart of everything. I love the impact of immediately surprising an audience – that’s my goal. I want people to enter the theater feeling secure, then quickly realize they’ve made a mistake trusting me, because from that point on, they’re completely invested in the experience and have no control over where it goes.
