Excitedly preparing for the launch of Grounded 2 into Game Preview on both Xbox and PC on July 29, it’s no surprise that news about it is once again making the rounds in the gaming community.
This information originates from a recent conversation between Eurogamer and Marcus Morgan, the Executive Producer for Grounded 2 at Obsidian Entertainment.
To clarify, they inquired about potential plans for Grounded 2 on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Notably, the original Grounded was among the early Xbox intellectual properties that transitioned beyond Microsoft’s console exclusivity to become available on Sony and Nintendo systems.
The response to the question drew on this, while providing a subtle tease.
I can’t discuss that topic at the moment, but let me tell you that Grounded 1 is available on every platform.
Marcus Morgan (Obsidian), in interview with Eurogamer.
It seems highly likely that over time, a sequel to the game Grounded will undoubtedly become available on both the PlayStation 5 and the potential successor of the Nintendo Switch.
The future timeline for this seems to be quite far off. One of the factors influencing this is the duration it stays in the ‘Game Preview’ or ‘Steam Early Access’, which are essentially the same concepts under different names.
For approximately two years following its early access debut, Grounded underwent development before its 1.0 release. Approximately 18 months after this milestone, Microsoft declared that the game would be available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
In my analysis, the shift towards cross-platform development is happening earlier in our project timelines now. We’ve essentially peeled off the proverbial band-aid, so it’s safe to assume that any strategic plans for this are already being visualized and discussed, even if the actual implementation is scheduled for 2027 or 2028.
During the same interview, they discussed the estimated duration of Obsidian’s early access phase for Grounded 2.
… It’s crucial that you have sufficient time. We spent approximately two years in early access with Grounded 1, which allowed us to effectively incorporate community feedback and modify the game accordingly. We’re aiming for a similar timespan again, just enough to perfect it.
Marcus Morgan (Obsidian), in interview with Eurogamer.
Patience is key when dealing with Obsidian, as they prioritize getting things right over rushing through projects. If the wait for their game release feels too long without an Xbox or PC access, remember there’s always a silver lining:
At least take comfort in knowing that the end result will be well worth the time spent waiting!
The individuals testing out the game during its early access phase will play a significant role in shaping it into the final version you might eventually play. Even though we’re eagerly waiting for Grounded 2, we’ll soon receive the initial, early access version of the game.
There’s a long way to go from here.
On Thursday, July 29, 2025, Grounded 2 is set to debut on both console and PC via Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access. During this early access phase, it can also be accessed through Xbox Game Pass on consoles as well as PCs.
