The upcoming Green Lantern series, now officially titled Lanterns, is set to premiere on the DC Universe (DCU) in 2026 as part of the new vision from DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. This will be the first live-action Green Lantern project since the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds, which wasn’t well-received. As characters like Hal Jordan and John Stewart prepare to return as Green Lanterns, details about the show are starting to emerge.
HBO Max has officially categorized James Gunn’s upcoming Lanterns series as both “Fantasy & Sci-Fi” and a “drama.” This is the first time a project from DC Studios has been classified under the “Fantasy & Sci-Fi” genre on the streaming platform.
The show being called “Lanterns” is interesting because it hints at a stronger focus on fantasy and science fiction than the initial marketing suggested. The first trailer presented a more realistic tone, showing Hal Jordan training John Stewart as a Green Lantern and hinting at a mystery unfolding in Nebraska. The trailer also only briefly showed the heroes using their powers – just a quick shot of Hal Jordan flying at the very end.
Fans expressed concern that the upcoming series Lanterns might be too realistic in tone, especially after Warner Bros. hinted it would blend the style of True Detective with a superhero narrative. Early descriptions also suggested a “buddy cop” dynamic, promising an added layer of dramatic tension.
I’m so excited for the Lanterns series! It’s going to be the second live-action show from DC Studios in the new DCU, and it looks amazing. We’ll get to see both John Stewart and Hal Jordan teaming up as Green Lanterns, and it sounds like they’ll be investigating a really creepy mystery right here on Earth. The cast is fantastic with Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler, Nathan Fillion, Ulrich Thomsen, and Kelly Macdonald – I can’t wait! It’s coming to HBO Max in August, so mark your calendars!

What To Expect From Lanterns in Fantasy & Sci-Fi Genre

Since HBO Max has labeled Lanterns as a Fantasy & Sci-fi series, viewers can anticipate a lot of exciting, otherworldly action and visuals throughout its eight episodes. While the trailers haven’t fully shown this yet, everything suggests the show will be packed with Green Lantern-inspired powers and action, especially after John Stewart begins training with Hal Jordan.
Audiences have already seen an early look at one of the new Green Lantern suits, and opinions online have been divided. The trailer also revealed the updated Green Lantern ring that both Stewart and Jordan will be using, offering a quick peek at its abilities – like when Jordan used it to fly and demonstrate his power during an interrogation.
With the show launching in about four months, HBO and DC Studios will likely share more details and previews soon. As it’s been over ten years since a Green Lantern project last appeared, fans are eager to see which parts of the story and characters DC focuses on for the series.
