If you’re looking for a fantasy show you can really get lost in without a huge time commitment, this one-season series is perfect for a weekend binge. Unlike many fantasy shows from the early to mid-2000s that had long seasons, this show delivers a complete story in a shorter, more focused format.

As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve noticed a trend: so many of the really successful TV shows in the genre are based on books that were already hits. Honestly, it makes sense. Building a fantasy world from the ground up is incredibly difficult, so adapting a story people already love is a smart way to increase your chances of success. A great example, and one that doesn’t get enough attention, is the 2007 show The Dresden Files. It was only twelve episodes, super easy to binge, and I really think it could have blown up if it had gotten more of a chance.

The Dresden Files Adaptation Deserved More Love As A Fantasy Series

Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files is a popular and extensive fantasy book series that began in 2000. The TV show The Dresden Files follows Harry Dresden (played by Paul Blackthorne), a private investigator who also happens to be a wizard. He solves supernatural crimes in Chicago. The show was a unique take on typical crime dramas, blending the feel of old-fashioned detective stories with elements of the supernatural.

Despite now being largely forgotten, and few remembering the TV adaptation, The Dresden Files was a show ahead of its time. Its original concept and bold storytelling were truly ambitious, especially for a fantasy series of that period, and it deserved a wider audience.

But the real heart of the series is Harry Dresden himself. He’s a messy, unpredictable character who constantly gets into trouble, and that’s what makes the fantasy world feel so real.
