Daredevil is having a moment! With the second season of the popular Disney+ series recently starting and a brand-new Marvel comic book series launching this week, fans are more engaged than ever with the hero of Hell’s Kitchen. The new comic, written by Stephanie Phillips (known for Planet She-Hulk and Spider-Gwen) and illustrated by Lee Garbett (Strange, Groot), takes Daredevil in a fresh direction after some truly epic adventures – including a trip to Hell and a stint as a priest. This new era finds him teaching law while facing a brand new threat, and the story is only just beginning.
ComicBook recently interviewed Chip Zdarsky about the first issue of the new Daredevil comic series. They discussed Matt Murdock’s journey in this new era and the introduction of a mysterious new villain named Omen. The first issue is full of action, and the conversation contains spoilers, so readers who haven’t read it yet are advised to do so before continuing. You won’t want to miss this interview or an exclusive preview of the second issue!
Omen’s Mystery Is Still Unfolding (And Familiar Faces Are On Their Way)

Matt Murdock has been reimagined in many different ways throughout the years, and we acknowledge that in the first issue. What made you decide to portray him as a teacher in this particular story?
I was able to bring something unique to the story, drawing on my experience as a former professor. With Matt being occupied with other commitments, this felt like a great way to reconnect him with his legal background. He’s now mentoring aspiring lawyers, and through them, he’s realizing his views might be different from those of a new generation.
This new story arc introduces a mysterious villain named Omen. We’re curious about who Omen is and how they differ from classic Daredevil villains like Bullseye or Kingpin. Also, can you explain why Omen is targeting Matt Murdock as a person, instead of Daredevil, the superhero?
Omen’s character draws heavily from classic Greek tragedies and gothic novels, making him a formidable opponent for Daredevil, who starts the story feeling secure. The uncertainty surrounding Omen’s identity and motives will create a constant sense of unease for Daredevil. The mystery of who Omen is and what they want will be a central focus of the initial story arc.

Could you introduce us to the new supporting characters in this series? We’re particularly interested in the new detective, Matt’s friend from law school, and the rival professor. How important are these characters to the overall storyline?
I’m also thrilled about the new students and how they’ll interact with Matt. Introducing him as a teacher is a great way to build a fresh group of characters around him, and I can’t wait for readers to see them develop and watch Matt connect with them. I especially love the new detective, Dominic, and I think his storyline will be the most unexpected and engaging part of the story.
Considering the timing of the second season of ‘Born Again,’ how does that affect your current work? Does it create more stress, or is it energizing?
It’s a really exciting time for Daredevil fans, with so much great content being released all at once. I’m especially thrilled about the new novel, Enemy of My Enemy, by Alex Segura – it’s fantastic! Being included with these other amazing Daredevil stories is a real honor.

This storyline really feels like a fresh start for the character, with changes to his everyday life, the people around him, and even the villains he faces. Will we still see some of the characters we already know and like (and dislike) return?
Okay, so page one of issue two is completely focused on Foggy! When my collaborator and I took over the book, we really wanted to make our mark and introduce some fresh ideas. We’ve actually got a whole list of characters and villains we’re hoping to feature as the story goes on, and we’re so excited about where things are headed.
Creating a new Daredevil story is challenging because the character has a long history with many beloved interpretations and a very dedicated fanbase. It’s tough to add something fresh while still honoring what people already love about him.
It’s always challenging to honor the original source material while also bringing your own creative vision to a beloved character. We aim to strike that balance – respecting what fans love while adding something fresh and unique. From the first issue, we hope readers can see that. That initial pressure quickly turns into excitement. It’s incredible to join the long list of talented creators who’ve worked on this title, and Lee and I are enjoying collaborating to tell the story and build this world together.

Without giving too much away what would you say the overall theme for this era of Daredevil is?
Matt is facing a lot of change. He’s entering a world where the students he interacts with are much younger than he is, new enemies have emerged, and even his old neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen, has transformed. Because Matt is a very determined person, we’re interested in seeing how he reacts to all of this and how these changes might ultimately affect him as well.
What has been the best part of writing Daredevil?
Collaborating with Lee and Frank Martin is a fantastic experience. They’re a truly exceptional team, and it’s hard to imagine a better pairing. Lee’s writing and Frank’s artwork combine to bring the story to life beautifully.
Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Daredevil #2 (And a First Look at the Cover for Issue #4)
