A Cult Classic 1990s Horror Is Finally Returning To Streaming (& So Is Its Sequel)

Following a lengthy hiatus from streaming platforms, the much-loved slasher horror film from 1998, previously unavailable to view, is soon coming to AMC Networks’ Shudder. Launched in 2015, Shudder has established itself as a hub for independent, high-budget, and original horror movies and TV series. This platform already boasts some timeless horror favorites like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Mother’s Day, Terrifier, among others. Soon, they’ll be welcoming the 1998 cult classic, Urban Legend, and its 2000 sequel to their collection. Despite generally unfavorable reviews, these movies managed to achieve commercial success.

In the late ’90s, a chilling film titled “Urban Legend” captured audiences’ attention, focusing on a string of murders that echoed tales from folklore on a New England university campus. Released in 1998, it became a box office hit, raking in $72.5 million against a production budget of just $14 million. Despite mixed reviews, “Urban Legend” gained a dedicated fanbase that eventually led to the creation of two sequels: “Urban Legends: Final Cut” (2000) and “Urban Legends: Bloody Mary” (2005). Fast forward to August 1, 2025, these iconic horror movies will find a new home on Shudder’s extensive collection, cementing their status in the annals of horror movie history.

In one of his first major film roles, Jared Leto starred as Paul, a student at Pendleton University who delves into urban legends and folklore after a string of murders on campus appear to mirror these stories. Alicia Witt, Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart, Michael Rosenbaum, and others joined Leto in the film. Additionally, horror veterans Robert Englund and Danielle Harris delivered impressive supporting performances. While some felt that Urban Legend could have been more, it’s a gripping and intricate movie worth checking out for fans of the genre.

After the debut of the second installment, “Urban Legends: Final Cut,” the film’s underperformance became particularly evident. This movie, set at a prestigious film school called Alpine University, featured a string of murders inspired by folklore, much like its 1998 predecessor. Jennifer Morrison, Matthew Davis, Hart Bochner, and others starred in “Final Cut,” introducing a fresh cast dealing with similar circumstances to the original. Regrettably, “Final Cut” fared even worse than “Urban Legend,” earning only $38.6 million against its budget, while receiving widespread criticism from critics. However, you’ll soon have the opportunity to watch both “Urban Legend” and its 2000 sequel back-to-back on Shudder.

In April of 2025, it was announced that a new version of the film “Urban Legend” was back in development by Screen Gems, a production company owned by Sony. This studio is known for producing movies like “Resident Evil,” “Attack the Block,” and “Brightburn.” The upcoming reboot will explore what urban legends might look like in today’s digital age, making it an intriguing project. If all goes well, the original film may return to Shudder on August 1st, potentially reigniting excitement for this promising franchise. Originally slated for release in 2020, a previous attempt at a reboot was cancelled due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
