Sega Genesis RPG Getting Surprising Re-Release Later This Month

A somewhat obscure and not particularly well-regarded RPG from the Sega Genesis is getting a re-release later this month, which is a bit unexpected. However, the power of nostalgia is strong, and those who owned a Sega Genesis back in 1992 might enjoy revisiting this game. If that sounds like you, mark April 24th on your calendar!

On April 24th, Shinyuden and Ratalaika Games will bring the classic Sega Genesis RPG, Traysia, to modern consoles and PC. It will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. While there’s no version planned specifically for the unreleased Nintendo Switch 2, owners of that console will be able to play the Switch version. This isn’t a complete remake of the game, nor is it a simple re-release. Instead, it offers enhancements like rewind and turbo features, screen filters, an art gallery, cheat codes, and a 21-track soundtrack. Currently, there are no trailers available for either this new version or the original game.

33-Year-Old RPG

If you haven’t heard of it, this game first came out way back in 1992, and it was exclusive to the Sega Genesis. You play as Roy, a young guy whose uncle, a traveling merchant, basically drops him off in the Kingdom of Salon. From there, Roy teams up with three other characters, and together they head north on a quest to stop a mysterious group of evil wizards. It’s a classic RPG, so expect a party-based system with random battles and fights that play out on a grid.

When it first came out, this role-playing game wasn’t well-received, so it’s unexpected to see it return after so many years. It’s unclear if this is simply a way to capitalize on fond memories, a labor of love from dedicated fans, or a way to gauge interest in bringing the series back on a larger scale. Either way, we didn’t think this game would return in 2026, or frankly, ever.
