The team at Embark Studios continues to expand ARC Raiders with updates like Flashpoint, which adds a tougher challenge and ensures players stay on their toes, even when playing with friends. And they aren’t stopping there – they have even larger plans for the game’s future.
Martin Singh-Blom, head of machine learning research at Embark, recently told GamesRadar+ that the studio is committed to offering players plenty of choices, even while aiming to create unpredictable and risky gameplay experiences. He explained they were inspired by a famous scene from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when designing this balance.
As people who actually build and work with the game’s physics, we’d love to see more realistic interactions. Imagine ropes that could pull at characters’ legs or wires that could trip them – similar to the speeder bike chase on Hoth in Star Wars. Better rope physics would make those kinds of dynamic moments possible.
Taking down a massive structure using only cables would be amazing, but the studio faces technical hurdles. Current gaming consoles have limits, and adding such a complex feature would require a lot of computing power.
Designers usually focus on what’s best for the game itself, while we tend to concentrate on exploring the possibilities of the new technology. Ideally, we find a balance where we innovate and create exciting features that also enhance the gameplay experience.
This direction fits well with how Nexon plans to use AI in the game, as they focus on improving the crafting systems to make them more refined. It’s encouraging to see the creators of such a popular shooter aiming to innovate and potentially change the landscape of gaming, but we’ll need to wait and see what they come up with.
