Over the past year, Xbox has unexpectedly emerged as a significant ally for PlayStation 5. Notably, numerous games originally published by Xbox have been ported to Sony’s system, with popular titles like Sea of Thieves and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle among them. This strategy appears to be benefiting Microsoft, as these games have seen impressive sales figures. Intriguingly, one previously exclusive Xbox game is now the top-selling new game on PS5 this year. As per Alinea Analytics (via Eurogamer), Forza Horizon 5 has shifted over three million copies on PS5 since its launch in March.
Before this achievement, “Monster Hunter Wilds” had held the sales record. However, Alinea Analytics attributes a recent sale increase to “Forza Horizon 5”, propelling it past overall sales for “Astro Bot”. This is quite remarkable, given that “Forza Horizon 5” was initially released in 2021 on Xbox platforms and PC, making its current success even more impressive. It’s worth noting that “Astro Bot” isn’t expected to surpass three million copies until the end of summer.

Alongside Forza Horizon 5 and Monster Hunter World, other popular new PlayStation 5 games this year include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Elden Ring (presumably Nightreign is a typo), and Clair Obscure: Expedition 33. These are the top-selling titles currently, but Alinea Analytics anticipates that this list might change before the year ends, as there are several highly anticipated games yet to be released.
It’s no wonder that fans of the PlayStation 5 are attracted to Forza Horizon 5; in my review for the Xbox Series X version last year, I described it as a shining example of what the hardware was capable of. While many Xbox Series X games didn’t live up to being system sellers, it seems that many PlayStation owners are capitalizing on these games becoming available on their preferred platform. Forza Horizon 5 isn’t the only Xbox game seeing strong sales on PS5, either. Last summer, reports emerged that Sea of Thieves had sold over a million copies on the platform.
Initially, Xbox’s strategy of making its games available on various platforms appears to be yielding positive results. Nevertheless, there are lingering uncertainties regarding the long-term impact on the Xbox brand. As Microsoft ports these games to PS5, the motivation for consumers to purchase an Xbox console seems minimal. Microsoft has hinted at planning another console after the Xbox Series X|S, but it’s uncertain if this will materialize or how they can persuade gamers to remain within their ecosystem.
