According to Gale, any idea for a fourth movie wouldn’t be as good as the original three, and history proves that sequels rarely measure up.

Rather than making a fourth Back to the Future film, the story might continue through the musical adaptation of the original movie, which is currently on tour. As Bob Gale explains, audiences shouldn’t expect the musical to be a perfect copy of the film, and it’s unrealistic to hope for appearances by Michael J. Fox or Christopher Lloyd, as they aren’t singers or dancers.

Robert Zemeckis, who directed Back to the Future and worked with Alan Gale, has mentioned he’d prefer a movie adaptation of the musical over making a fourth Back to the Future film. However, no such movie is currently in development. This means Back to the Future will likely remain a trilogy, which is rare in Hollywood, as most franchises continue with sequels.
