Disney+ is now streaming Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a series that puts a spotlight on one of the franchise’s most intimidating villains. While some fans believed Maul’s story was finished, Shadow Lord cleverly continues his journey. The series picks up right after the events of Clone Wars and Order 66, showing Maul attempting to rebuild his criminal empire after being captured by Ahsoka Tano and her allies.
In just two episodes of Shadow Lord, Dave Filoni, a key creative leader for Star Wars, has changed some established backstory details of a significant criminal group – adding another retcon to the Star Wars timeline.
Crimson Dawn’s Star Wars History Just Got More Complicated

In the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, Paul Bettany played Dryden Vos, a cruel and manipulative crime boss connected to a large criminal organization called Crimson Dawn. The film’s ending revealed that Vos’s partner, Qi’ra, unexpectedly killed him and took control of his criminal empire. It turned out that the real leader of Crimson Dawn was Maul, who supported Qi’ra’s decisive and violent takeover.
As a big Star Wars fan, I was really intrigued to see what happened with Crimson Dawn after Solo. It was cool to see their story expanded in the Marvel comics, especially through those three big arcs – “War of the Bounty Hunters”, “Crimson Reign”, and “Hidden Empire”. They showed how Qi’ra really took charge after Maul was gone, turning Crimson Dawn into this huge, shadowy organization with spies and assassins pulling strings everywhere. They were making a ton of money and gathering information, but it turned out their ultimate goal was to take down Palpatine and free the galaxy from the Sith! It didn’t work, of course – the Emperor crushed them. But even in defeat, Crimson Dawn indirectly helped the Rebellion by giving them clues about the second Death Star, and even played a part in their final victory. It was a really interesting side story that added a lot to the universe.
How Maul – Shadow Lord Creates A New Star Wars Continuity Change

The early episodes of Shadow Lord reveal that Maul is searching for ex-members of his criminal organization, the “Shadow Collective,” believing they abandoned him when the Empire took power. One group he mentions is Crimson Dawn, and the series suggests this group has been active since the Clone Wars. This differs from what many fans previously thought – that Crimson Dawn emerged during the chaotic period of the Republic’s downfall when law enforcement was crumbling.
The new backstory for Crimson Dawn, as presented in Shadow Lord, has some interesting ideas, but ultimately isn’t very well executed. It depicts Crimson Dawn beginning as a ruthless group of mercenaries, bounty hunters, and pirates who traveled the galaxy, taking what they wanted and oppressing local populations – including the people who would later become Enfys Nest’s Cloud-Riders. While Star Wars books hint that Crimson Dawn was the leader of five major crime syndicates – alongside groups like the Hutts, Black Sun, and the Pykes – this hasn’t been a significant focus in any major Star Wars story until now.
The story of Maul – Shadow Lord reveals that Crimson Dawn existed and was operating before the rise of the Empire, and importantly, has a significant history with Maul himself, before he became its leader. This adds new depth and explains Maul’s actions and whereabouts in Solo.
