Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord! The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, has introduced what many fans are calling the best droid character since K-2SO from Andor. Star Wars has always been known for its memorable droids, starting with the iconic R2-D2 and C-3PO in the original 1977 film, and continues to add intriguing robotic characters to the universe.
For many years, R2-D2 and C-3PO were the most recognizable droids in the Star Wars universe. While the prequel films showed many different battle droids, Artoo and Threepio continued to be the main droids with individual names. Lately, Disney has started to feature new droids more prominently. BB-8, in particular, became the hero’s companion in the sequel trilogy, and several other Star Wars projects have introduced their own uniquely named droids.
Since Disney acquired Star Wars, we’ve seen a lot of fantastic droid characters appear. From BB-8 and L3-37 in the movies to K-2SO in Andor and SM-33 in Skeleton Crew, plus droids like BD-1 and ND-5 in the video games, recent years have brought many memorable additions. Now, the series Maul – Shadow Lord has added two more droids to that list.
Meet Spybot and Two-Boots, two standout droids from the series Maul – Shadow Lord. Even after just two episodes, they’ve quickly become fan favorites. Spybot is a slicer and surveillance expert for Maul’s criminal organization, while Two-Boots works with the Janix law enforcement team, reporting directly to Brander Lawson. Many viewers already consider them among the best characters in Maul – Shadow Lord, and some believe they’re the most compelling droids to appear in a Star Wars series since K-2SO debuted in Andor last year.
Spybot & Two-Boots In Maul – Shadow Lord Are Great Droid Characters
Spybot and Two-Boots are both delightful droid characters that offer a welcome bit of humor to the generally serious tone of the Maul – Shadow Lord comic. Spybot provides laughs through his over-the-top, energetic dialogue, comical voice, and a bit of a self-important attitude, similar to R2-D2. Two-Boots, on the other hand, is funny because of his strict adherence to rules and his connection with Brander Lawson – he’s a lot like C-3PO in that regard.
Spybot and Two-Boots aren’t just funny characters – they’re also surprisingly skilled, like all the best droids in Star Wars. Spybot is a master planner, able to organize complex robberies and hack into even the most secure systems, such as the Janix police network. Two-Boots is a valuable partner in Lawson’s detective work, and despite his focus on rules, he’s already helped crack the case on several occasions.
Both Two-Boots and Spybot benefit from talented voice actors, which is a key ingredient in making a character beloved by fans. Comedian Richard Ayoade brings Two-Boots to life, and veteran Star Wars voice actor David W. Collins voices Spybot. Both actors inject so much personality into their roles through voice work alone, helping these droids truly stand out.
Star Wars Rarely Has Villainous Droid Characters
One of the more unique aspects of the droids in Maul – Shadow Lord is the character Spybot. Typically, Star Wars doesn’t feature many villainous droids with distinct personalities. While battle droids are common as disposable units in the prequels and The Clone Wars, and the Empire often uses evil droids, they’re seldom given names or developed as characters. Spybot stands out as an unusual exception to this trend.
Spybot isn’t just another faceless villain droid; he’s quickly become a memorable and unique part of Maul’s gang. Surprisingly, Maul actually seems to care for Spybot – he even pets him, and the droid responds with a purring sound. It’s unusual for a droid on the villainous side to have as much personality as Spybot does in Maul – Shadow Lord.

Interestingly, the only character in Star Wars who truly resembles Spybot is Todo-360, Cad Bane’s droid assistant from The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. Like Spybot, Todo-360 helped Bane with his crimes, but he wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic about hurting people or breaking the law. There’s even a possibility that Todo-360 inspired Spybot, since Matt Michnovetz, a creator of Maul – Shadow Lord, also wrote episodes featuring Cad Bane in The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch.
Spybot being a unique and rare villain droid is a perfect fit for the Maul – Shadow Lord series. This show is the first Star Wars project to really focus on a villain’s perspective. Having an evil droid sidekick for Maul complements the show’s central theme and its darker atmosphere. This is great for Maul – Shadow Lord, and it also helps Spybot become a memorable character in the Star Wars universe.
