The actors who played the X-Men in Fox’s films will likely make one last appearance in upcoming Avengers movies before Marvel officially restarts the franchise with a fresh cast. Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, will direct the first new X-Men movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a release date hasn’t been announced, some believe it could be released in 2028 as part of Phase 7 of the MCU, meaning Marvel will soon need to find a new group of actors, and fans are already discussing who might be cast.
During a recent episode of the podcast The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider, a well-connected industry source, revealed that Marvel is considering Peter Claffey for the role of Beast and Odessa A’Zion for Rogue. It’s important to remember that these are just names Sneider has heard as potential candidates – nothing is official yet. This news quickly generated a lot of discussion online, with some fans thrilled by the possibilities and others believing Claffey might be better suited for a different Marvel character. Here’s a look at some of the reactions.
Peter Claffey doesn’t fit the role of Beast, but he’s perfect for Colossus. He’s a huge, surprisingly gentle rugby player – basically the ideal Colossus in real life.

I’m a big fan of Peter Claffey and hope to see him in future projects. While I wasn’t completely sold on his portrayal of Beast, I think he’d be perfect as Colossus.

I’ll spend my last penny to see Odessa A’Zion as Rouge.

I’m a big fan of Peter Claffey and hope to see him in future projects. While I didn’t love his performance as Beast, I think he’d be perfect for the role of Colossus.

Odessa wouldn’t be my first choice for Rogue, but I’m not mad at it.

When Will Marvel Studios Announce the New X-Men Cast?
There’s still no official news about who will play the X-Men, but sources suggest Marvel is considering actors like Claffey and A’Zion, and it’s easy to see why. Both are quickly becoming popular stars – Claffey is leading the well-received A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and A’Zion recently starred in the Best Picture-nominated Marty Supreme. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemingly heading towards a storyline focused on mutants and the X-Men, Marvel is probably looking for actors who can commit to these roles long-term. Reports last year indicated they were specifically seeking up-and-coming talent instead of established stars to help manage production costs.
While Claffey and A’Zion are promising newcomers, they aren’t yet big enough stars to demand huge salaries like Robert Downey Jr. Marvel is making a wise decision by controlling costs. After a weaker year at the box office, a lower budget will make the upcoming X-Men reboot more likely to be profitable. Hiring lesser-known actors is typical for X-Men films – Hugh Jackman wasn’t famous when he first played Wolverine. Marvel likely wants established actors for roles like Charles Xavier and Magneto, but the younger X-Men characters can be played by fresh, new talent.
Beyond figuring out who will play the new X-Men, fans are eager to know when Marvel will finally announce the full cast. While rumors about casting have been circulating for over a year, no official announcements have been made. It’s likely Marvel’s team, led by Kevin Feige, is still negotiating with actors and is deliberately delaying any news to maintain excitement for current releases. 2026 is set to be a huge year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel probably wants to keep the spotlight on those films for now.
It’s interesting to think about how the X-Men might fit into Marvel’s plans for the Doomsday project. While Marvel could announce the cast for the X-Men at Comic-Con this year, Doomsday would probably be the main focus of their presentation (if they have one). There’s a chance the original cast could symbolically pass the torch to the new actors, but it might be too soon for that reveal. Also, Comic-Con happens before Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out, and rumors suggest Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in that film. Marvel has been keeping Sink’s role a secret, likely saving the announcement for the premiere. Because of all this, it might be smarter to wait until next year to officially introduce the new X-Men team.
