7 Great Female Marvel Heroes Nobody Talks About

Marvel Comics is known for creating many memorable female superheroes, including Invisible Woman, Storm, Jean Grey, Carol Danvers, Psylocke, and Scarlet Witch. While Marvel hasn’t always portrayed women well – some early stories, influenced by Stan Lee, were problematic – they’ve undeniably created some truly iconic characters. The most popular heroes often receive the most attention, appearing in major comics and storylines. But there are many other fantastic female heroes within the Marvel universe as well.

Marvel has introduced many female superheroes over the years. While some have been popular briefly and then forgotten, and others haven’t received the recognition they deserve, a few have even fallen from iconic status. These seven amazing Marvel women are particularly underrated and have the potential to become major stars.

7) Monica Rambeau

Captain Marvel has a long history in the Marvel Universe, but many fans forget about the second hero to take on the name: Monica Rambeau. She developed the ability to control energy and eventually joined the Avengers, even leading the team at one point. Over the years, she’s used different superhero names, including Photon and her current one, Spectrum, and has been part of many different teams. While she’s now appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel hasn’t really showcased her potential, which is unfortunate because she’s a truly awesome character.

6) Sharon Ventura

Sharon Ventura is a relatively obscure Fantastic Four character who deserves more recognition. She’s gone by a few different names, including She-Thing and Ms. Marvel (before Kamala Khan), and even dated the Thing. While her history includes a poorly handled storyline involving sexual assault and resulting distrust of men, there’s potential to develop her into a much stronger character. She isn’t a household name, but with the right creative focus, she could become a major figure in the Marvel Universe.

5) Brunnhilde

Currently, the Valkyrie is Jane Foster, who became one of the warrior women tasked with bringing fallen heroes to Valhalla after battling cancer. However, she isn’t the original Valkyrie; that was Brunnhilde, first appearing in Thor #133. Brunnhilde was an Asgardian warrior who gained prominence in Defenders. While she was a vital part of that team, she’s mostly been a supporting character in recent years. Now that Jane Foster is the main Valkyrie, it’s time for Brunnhilde to rejoin a major Marvel team like the Avengers.

4) Boom Boom

Boom Boom first showed up in comic books during the 1980s, becoming part of the expanding group of teenage mutant heroes featured in titles like X-Factor, New Mutants, and X-Terminators. She eventually joined the New Mutants team and later moved to X-Force, where she gained a lot of popularity. Her ability to create explosive plasma blasts that detonate on a timer made her a valuable fighter, and she was always an entertaining character to follow. Over the years, Boom Boom has had many different personality traits, but at her core, she’s simply a young woman who wants to enjoy life. While she isn’t a deeply complex character, she has enough personality that writers can easily make her a standout hero.

3) Songbird

I’ve always thought the Thunderbolts are seriously underrated! The whole concept – villains pretending to be heroes – was brilliant, and it really gave some of those characters a chance to shine. For me, Songbird is definitely the standout. She used to be Screaming Mimi, but when she joined the ‘Bolts, she genuinely started using her powers for good – she was one of the first to really embrace being a hero. She was so close to becoming a major star back in the late ’90s, and there was even a hint in Avengers Forever (Vol. 1) that she could become an Avenger! It’s a shame the team ended up becoming more of a Marvel version of the Suicide Squad, because so much of what made them interesting got lost. Songbird is a fantastic hero, and I really hope she finally gets the recognition she deserves.

2) Domino

X-Force assembled the most skilled and dangerous mutants for high-stakes missions, and Domino was a key member. Though often supporting Cable, she’s also starred in her own comics and was a highlight of the recent X-Force series. Domino has a complex backstory with a lot of potential, and the Krakoa Era really allowed her character to shine. It’s unfortunate that those developments seem to have been overlooked recently.

1) The Wasp

Janet Van Dyne, also known as The Wasp, was a groundbreaking superheroine for Marvel, but she hasn’t always received the recognition she deserves. She gave up a life of privilege to fight crime, gaining abilities like shrinking, flight, and a powerful sting from her boyfriend and eventual husband, Hank Pym. A founding member of the Avengers, she even led the team on several occasions. Despite her impressive history, Marvel hasn’t consistently invested in making her a major star, especially since the 1980s. It’s frustrating that she often gets less attention than other heroes like Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch, considering how fantastic and important her character is.
