Animation has always been a significant part of entertainment, and that’s even more true now with the rise of streaming services. Platforms like Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ offer both classic animated shows and movies, as well as plenty of new, original content. However, not every animated project actually makes it to these services. Recently, Netflix indicated that a planned movie from a popular franchise—originally announced in 2021—won’t be released on the platform after all.
Redwall is a long-running series of fantasy books for children, first published in 1986 by Brian Jacques. The series includes twenty-two books, and in 2021, plans were announced for an animated adaptation with Patrick McHale, the creator of Over the Garden Wall, involved. However, McHale left the project in 2022, leading to uncertainty about its future. Now, according to Broadcast Now, the planned Netflix animated film has been cancelled, meaning fans likely won’t see Redwall come to life as an animated series or film in the near future.
What Is Redwall?

The Redwall series takes place in a world where woodland creatures, like mice, band together to defend themselves against dangerous predators. The first book introduces Mossflower Wood, a peaceful land threatened by Cluny, a fearsome one-eyed rat and his army. They aim to conquer Redwall Abbey, and the mice’s only hope lies in finding the lost sword of a legendary hero, Martin the Warrior. The story follows a young, unlikely apprentice mouse who must rise to the challenge and become a hero himself.
The popular book series was first adapted into an animated TV show in 1999, which ran for three years before being cancelled. Although the show covered some of the books’ stories, much of the source material was never used, making the recent news about the cancelled Netflix movie particularly frustrating for fans. While Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed the cancellation, the film had been stalled for years, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Fortunately, fans can still enjoy the original animated series online and the books themselves continue to be popular.
I was so bummed to hear Netflix cancelled that awesome mouse adventure series! It was really special with Patrick McHale leading the charge. I’d love to hear what you all think about it – let’s chat about it over in the ComicBook Forum!
