Idris Elba is an incredibly diverse and busy actor. He’s played a huge range of characters, from Heimdall in the Marvel movies to voice roles like Chief Bogo in Zootopia, Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, and Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He’s even taking on the role of Man-At-Arms in the new Masters of the Universe film, and that’s just a small glimpse of everything he’s done. Elba has also worked on horror projects, and now one of his best, yet often overlooked, performances is available to stream on Netflix.
Released in 2022, Beast is a thrilling survival horror film starring Idris Elba. He plays a widowed father who takes his daughters on a trip to a South African game reserve, but their vacation quickly turns dangerous when they’re hunted by a deadly lion. The film becomes a desperate struggle for survival. While it didn’t do well in theaters, critics generally enjoyed Beast.
Beast Is an Action-Packed Thrill Ride (And Elba Fights a Lion In It)
Unlike many thrillers that try to be overly complex, Beast is focused and delivers exactly what it promises. At just 93 minutes long, the movie is fast-paced, which effectively builds both the excitement and the tension. This straightforward approach is very effective. We quickly learn why Dr. Nate Samuels (Idris Elba) and his daughters are in Africa, and understand the family’s emotional state. The danger posed by the lion is established immediately, and soon Samuels and his daughters are fighting for their survival. From there, the film is almost non-stop action, including a gripping scene where Samuels confronts the lion himself.
What’s really striking about Beast is how direct and gripping it is. It expertly builds genuine fear – Samuel’s daughters are just as threatened by the lion as he is – and explores the powerful human instinct to survive. While a family facing off against a lion could easily become over-the-top, Beast manages to keep things believable, letting the audience simply experience the intense situation alongside the characters. It’s a raw, instinctive story, and it works incredibly well. Idris Elba delivers a standout performance, balancing action-hero intensity with a father’s fierce determination. Plus, the movie wraps up with a truly satisfying ending, making the whole thrilling ride worthwhile.
Beast is now streaming on Netflix.
