As a huge Star Trek fan, it’s a little worrying to see what’s happening right now. With Paramount and Warner Bros. possibly joining forces, and Warner Bros. having such a massive collection of shows and movies, it feels like Trek is at a crossroads. It’s especially disheartening because the big push into streaming a few years ago hasn’t really worked out – most of those new shows are already gone. Right now, only Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are still releasing new episodes on Paramount+, and even those are ending soon. What’s even more concerning is that, as far as I know, there’s nothing new in the works to take their place. It’s a tough time to be a Trekkie!
Many fans are excited that new Star Trek movies are being planned. However, the Star Trek shows on streaming services have built a strong and loyal following. These fans were particularly hoping for more shows that would connect to the existing series, but it now appears one of those planned spinoffs won’t be moving forward.
Star Trek’s Kirk: Year One TV Series Is (Probably) Dead
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel to the classic Star Trek series, building on the story established in Star Trek: Discovery. The show takes place before James T. Kirk became captain of the USS Enterprise, focusing on Captain Pike – Kirk’s predecessor and mentor. Despite knowing a prophecy foretold a grim fate if he continued his duties, Pike led Starfleet with optimism and inspired a new generation of officers, including the future Captain Kirk.
There were reports that after Strange New Worlds, a new series would follow Kirk and his crew during the first year of his command of the Enterprise. This series would show how Kirk became a skilled captain and built the strong relationships with his crew seen in the original Star Trek. While casting news in December 2025 suggested this “Year One” project was happening, recent information indicates a change of plans.
According to a recent post by Trek Central, the main sets used for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are currently being dismantled by the crew. This usually happens when a studio is sure those sets won’t be needed for any future projects. The Strange New Worlds sets are especially significant because they depict a period of the USS Enterprise that was intended to be revisited in a planned series called “Year One.” Therefore, Trek Central suggests that the cancellation of “Year One” is now highly probable.
Fans were also excited about Star Trek: Legacy, a potential new series that was unofficially introduced during the third season of Star Trek: Picard. It would have followed characters from Picard as they took charge of a new Enterprise ship, with the children of original Next Generation crew members serving as officers. Both Legacy and Year One seemed like relatively safe and promising projects for Star Trek, making the news that neither is moving forward particularly disappointing for many fans.
