Gimli starts out as a somewhat grumpy and arrogant character, but he quickly becomes a fan favorite in The Lord of the Rings. The movies especially showcase his comedic side, with witty and often surprising reactions – his fear of the Army of the Dead in The Return of the King is a great example. He’s an important character throughout all three films.
Dwarves play a significant role throughout all six films based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, though Gimli is particularly memorable. However, despite their importance to the story, there are still some confusing or unexplained aspects of the dwarves and their portrayal.
Gimli Has No Idea What Happened In Moria

A key scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring happens when the group is forced to travel through the Mines of Moria. There, they fight a terrifying battle against countless orcs, a huge troll that seriously wounds Frodo, and most dramatically, Gandalf confronts the Balrog, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process.
It’s easy to overlook how wrong Gimli is about Moria. He expects a welcoming feast and warm fires, but instead finds the remains of all the dwarves who once lived there – and they’ve been dead for a very long time, judging by how decayed the bodies are. While Moria wasn’t his home, it’s surprising he didn’t know about this tragedy, especially one that happened so long ago.
Gimli Wanted Galadriel’s Hair

Galadriel is famously beautiful, and both the original Lord of the Rings movies and the Rings of Power series show how much influence she had over everyone in Middle-earth. Despite this, it’s still strange that Gimli specifically asked for a single strand of her hair in The Fellowship of the Ring.
This interaction is already a bit unsettling, but it’s especially strange that Gimli asked for Galadriel’s hair – and even requested three strands! It’s hard to understand why he wanted a piece of her. Dwarves aren’t known for liking elves, no matter how beautiful they are. Plus, the Fellowship was facing serious danger, making it seem impractical to even try and keep track of a single strand of hair.
Gimli Seems To No Nothing About The Events Of The Hobbit

While Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films weren’t as successful as his Lord of the Rings trilogy, they expanded on Bilbo Baggins’ history, showing how he found the One Ring and developed friendships with the dwarves – especially Thorin Oakenshield. The films also included Glóin, who was Gimli’s father.
Interestingly, Glóin doesn’t just meet Bilbo; he also interacts with Legolas and even shows Legolas a picture of young Gimli. However, in Peter Jackson’s films, Gimli never seems to recognize Bilbo, Legolas, or anything about their shared adventure. It’s also worth remembering that Legolas wasn’t a character in Tolkien’s original book, The Hobbit.
Dwarf Women Aren’t Indistinguishable From The Men

A funny moment in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers involves Aragorn, Gimli, and Éowyn talking about dwarf women. This conversation subtly highlights Éowyn’s growing romantic feelings for Aragorn. Gimli explains the common belief that dwarf women are rarely seen because they look and sound so much like dwarf men, leading people to often mistake them for men.
The show The Rings of Power later introduced Princess Disa, which proves the idea that female dwarves never venture into the mines was a significant overstatement. While The Two Towers couldn’t have predicted this, the introduction of Disa makes the original scene and Gimli’s statement about female dwarves seem illogical.
Gimli Travels To The Undying Lands

While a touching part of Gimli’s tale, his journey to the Undying Lands doesn’t quite fit with Tolkien’s established lore, as dwarves weren’t meant to be able to go there. However, that’s how his story concludes in the books. It appears Legolas successfully argued for Gimli’s inclusion, likely because of everything Gimli accomplished for Middle-earth – a heartwarming detail in their friendship.
This surprising development isn’t fully explored, but it’s heartwarming to see the friendship between Legolas and Gimli from the original movies continue for life – and even beyond.
