Netflix offers a massive selection of shows, and many are perfect for watching all in a weekend. While it’s known for long-running hits like House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Stranger Things, Netflix has also become known for its shorter shows and limited series. These shorter programs are incredibly popular, though not all of them were originally intended to be brief.
Netflix gained a reputation for unexpectedly ending shows that seemed to have potential, even when they were innovative. While the streaming service initially stood out with bold ideas and new talent, it’s become less supportive of shows that aren’t mainstream. Examples include Sense8, which was cancelled after two seasons, and Dead Boy Detectives, a Sandman spinoff cancelled after just one season, despite positive reviews and a dedicated fanbase.
Even with some challenges, Netflix has consistently created popular, well-made shows. These series are enjoyable whether they’re designed as a single season or have the potential for multiple seasons, and many are perfect for watching all in one weekend.
No Good Deed (2024)
8 Episodes, 1 Season
Despite a talented cast, the show No Good Deed wasn’t picked up for a second season. Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano had fantastic chemistry, bringing both humor and heart to the series, which was created by Liz Feldman, the creator of Dead to Me. They skillfully played the roles of homeowners grieving the loss of their son. The cast also included O-T Fagbenle and Abbi Jacobson, who played potential buyers for their house.
The show struck a special balance between heartfelt moments, comedy, and mystery, but it might have been too different for Netflix to keep funding. While it sometimes tried to do too much at once, No Good Deed was ultimately a pleasant, feel-good experience – enjoyable, light, and completely satisfying.
The Midnight Club (2022)
10 Episodes, 1 Season
Originally, The Midnight Club was intended to be the only Mike Flanagan series on Netflix to run for multiple seasons, but it ended up being cancelled after one season like his other shows. While Flanagan is known for intense adult horror like Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, The Midnight Club was different, aimed at a younger audience and giving the characters a more innocent and heartfelt feel.
The young characters in the show brought a fresh, modern feel to the classic storytelling technique of telling scary stories within a larger story. This made The Midnight Club feel both like a timeless Gothic tale and a thrilling new show for teens. Though the last episode didn’t tie up every loose end, the show’s ten episodes work well as a single, suspenseful story.
Feel Good (2020-2021)
12 Episodes, 2 Seasons
Mae Martin first gained recognition as a TV writer with the unsettling series Wayward, but many consider their 2020 show Feel Good to be even stronger. Feel Good tackles difficult subjects like addiction, abuse, and identity with Mae Martin’s characteristic wit and a surprisingly heartwarming touch.
Mae and George (Charlotte Ritchie) had a believable connection that made viewers want them to succeed, even when they messed up. But Lisa Kudrow was the show’s secret comedic star, playing Mae’s wonderfully dry and supportive mother. Overall, Feel Good beautifully captured Mae Martin’s unique perspective on family, love, and figuring things out.
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen (2026)
8 Episodes, 1 Season
As a huge fan of atmospheric storytelling, I was really intrigued by Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The Duffer Brothers, known for Stranger Things, created this limited series that just felt… unsettling from the start. Things definitely got creepy and strange, but what I loved was how grounded the relationship between the two main characters, Rachel and Nicky, was. It wasn’t a jump-scare-filled horror show; it felt like something was subtly wrong with the world around them, and that made it all the more effective.
Camila Morrone from Daisy Jones and The Six and Adam DiMarco from The White Lotus had great chemistry, which made viewers root for their characters even as everything fell apart around them. The show creates a consistently sad and ominous mood, and the feeling that something terrible is about to happen is central to the story – it’s something you really need to experience to understand.
Boots (2025)
8 Episodes, 1 Season
The Netflix series Boots stood out for its unique and refreshing style. Adapted from Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine, the show managed a difficult feat: it told the story of a gay Marine in the 1990s with a surprisingly uplifting and empowering tone, while still acknowledging the serious and complicated nature of his experiences.
Miles Heizer did a great job playing the main character, but the show’s supporting cast really made Boots special, creating a moving and human story. Max Parker stood out as Sergeant Sullivan, a complex character who highlighted why this story needed to be told. Boots connected with both young LGBTQ+ viewers and older military veterans, but despite overwhelmingly positive reviews, Netflix canceled it after only one season.
Midnight Mass (2021)
7 Episodes, 1 Season
As a huge fan of atmospheric horror, I was completely blown away by Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass. It’s not just scary, but really thought-provoking, almost like a religious story wrapped up in a fantasy horror package. What I loved most was the setting – this tiny, isolated island community. It immediately created this intense, claustrophobic feeling, knowing everyone was essentially trapped there, and that feeling just hung over everything.
Hamish Linklater was captivating as Father Paul, a character who was both charming and enigmatic, making him impossible to ignore. This perfectly captured the overall feeling of Midnight Mass, which created a compelling sense of foreboding and inescapable fate. The show’s focus on a small town was crucial to exploring its themes of religion and community, and Zach Gilford as Riley and Kate Siegel as Erin beautifully portrayed the quiet sadness that was central to the show’s lasting impression.
Russian Doll (2019-2022)
15 Episodes, 2 Seasons
The show Russian Doll was excellent as a short series, but its second season was even more impressive. It evolved from a clever take on the Groundhog Day concept into a moving story about family history and overcoming trauma. The show’s unique and visually interesting science fiction elements added to the mystery while still making its emotional core clear and impactful.
Natasha Lyonne truly shone as Nadia, making her early strained relationship with her mother and grandmother even more noticeable. Hopefully, Natasha Lyonne and Netflix will eventually create a third season of Russian Doll.
Beef (2023)
10 Episodes, 1 Season
The show Beef was a fantastic limited series, and fans are hoping the upcoming second season maintains the high quality of the first. Like other successful limited series recently, Beef is evolving into a longer, anthology-style show, meaning the first season will remain a complete, standalone story. It’s a really compelling look at its characters, and worth checking out, especially with season two on the way.
Steven Yeun and Ali Wong proved their talent as leads in the first season of Beef, with performances that drove a surprisingly wild and imaginative story – one that felt as creatively ambitious as Everything Everywhere All At Once. The second season of Beef will feature a completely new storyline and characters, but the first season successfully set the show’s unique style and central idea. This is another Netflix series that’s likely to be a long-term favorite, and it’s perfect for a weekend binge.
