Warning: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episodes 1 & 2.
The fifth and final season of The Boys kicked off with a thrilling start, immediately establishing a high-stakes and dangerous atmosphere. After seven years of following these characters, viewers knew to expect some heartbreaking moments and were bracing themselves for potential losses.
Many viewers expected several episodes to pass before any major characters were killed off, so A-Train’s death in the first episode of The Boys season 5 was a shocking surprise. It signaled that everyone is vulnerable, and the future looks dangerous. While there’s been a lot of speculation about who will survive, I’m especially worried about one of the original characters.
From the very beginning, MM has been a key member of The Boys, often serving as the team’s conscience. He consistently tries to establish boundaries for how far they’ll go to take down Vought and Homelander, but he isn’t afraid to fight dirty when necessary.
Even though Mother’s Milk is the most level-headed and practical member of the team in season 5 of The Boys, he’s also surprisingly the most emotionally vulnerable, particularly at the start of the season. Unlike most of his teammates, and similar to Hughie, he’s the most hesitant to kill, and he consistently tries to de-escalate situations instead of taking the simplest, often more violent, path.
However, the biggest issue is that MM had a major victory in the premiere of the newest season of The Boys, which now makes him a likely target for elimination.
Why I’m Worried About MM’s Fate After The Boys Season 5’s First Two Episodes
A-Train was the first major character to die in The Boys season 5, but his death felt right because he’d finished his story and become a better person. If this pattern continues, Mother’s Milk might be the next hero to go, as his killing of Love Sausage showed he’s moving towards completing his own personal growth.
Throughout the series, Homelander has been the primary focus of The Boys, but MM unexpectedly developed a personal rivalry with Love Sausage. Their conflict began when Love Sausage attacked him at the Sage Grove Center in season 2, and they later had another, more comical encounter during the events of “Herogasm.”
Mother’s Milk and Love Sausage met again in the season 4 finale of The Boys. Love Sausage surprised Mother’s Milk in a public restroom and knocked him unconscious, which is why he ended up in the Starlight interment camp at the start of season 5. Later, after Love Sausage provoked him, Mother’s Milk finally got his revenge and challenged him to a one-on-one fight.
In an incredible display of strength, MM defeated his opponent without any enhancements. He strategically targeted Love Sausage’s primary ability – an exceptionally large appendage – and used it to restrain and ultimately defeat him, delivering a fitting end to the villain.
This seems like a positive development – our hero finally defeats his enemy, and The Boys have one fewer super-powered individual to worry about. However, it’s unusual for a normal human to win a physical fight against a supe like this, hinting that there’s more to the story and we haven’t seen the full picture yet.
Although the titles for the upcoming episodes of The Boys suggest Mother’s Milk might make it further into the season, the show is known for its shocking twists. Killing off a fan favorite like him early on would be a major surprise. Plus, with Mother’s Milk recently showing a more compassionate side by sparing Countess Crow, it seems his story is heading towards a satisfying conclusion, making an early exit less likely.
When the character seems happy, it often hints that something bad is about to happen, which is why the first two episodes are so concerning for fans of the series.
What Needs To Happen With MM’s Story Before His (Potential) Death
As the story with MM nears its conclusion, The Boys needs to wrap up a few loose ends, especially if he’s going to die. First, MM needs to regain some hope. Earlier in the series, he was driven by revenge and negativity, and his recent actions, like confronting Love Sausage, show how far he’s fallen. He needs to find his way back from that before the story ends.
He felt trapped in the internment camp and didn’t think he, Hughie, or Frenchie would ever escape, which is why he was so willing to fight Love Sausage, even if there was a chance they could have been free. When he decided to trust Countess Crow and let her go, it showed he was starting to feel hopeful again, but things won’t truly improve until MM is back to his old self.
The OG Boys member also needs a chance to reconnect with his family and finally resolve their issues. His complicated relationship with his ex-wife has been a recurring theme throughout the show, and it’s deeply affected how he connects with his daughter.
If he can regain hope, it would be good to see him acknowledge the possibility he may never see his family again, while still speaking to them with strength and confidence. This acceptance would then pave the way for him to finally overcome the trauma caused by his experiences with Soldier Boy.
Although Mother’s Milk has been publicly fighting with Love Sausage, his real enemy is Soldier Boy, who murdered his family. Now that Soldier Boy is back and will be a key player in season 5 of The Boys, Mother’s Milk should finally get the opportunity to face him and settle the score.
Mother’s Milk showed some progress in season 3, but even though Soldier Boy seemingly died, MM is still clearly struggling with past trauma, evidenced by his panic when he learned Soldier Boy was actually alive. The show needs to allow MM to fully heal before giving his character a definitive conclusion, as it would be sad to see him leave.
