Titles like Xenoblade Chronicles and Final Fantasy deliver unforgettable stories, emotional moments, and immersive worlds that are truly special. However, their length can be daunting. While we enjoy getting lost in these games, we also want to actually finish them! JRPGs can feel overwhelming, but they offer unique, impactful experiences that are hard to find elsewhere.

As a JRPG fan, I’m always looking for a great adventure, but sometimes I just don’t have weeks to dedicate to a single game. Luckily, there are some fantastic JRPGs out there that you can actually finish in a weekend – maybe with a few extra hours thrown in! They still deliver that awesome JRPG experience – the epic battles, the compelling stories – just in a more compact package. If you want a quick but satisfying JRPG fix, these are seriously the way to go.

5. Cosmic Star Heroine

I recently finished playing Cosmic Star Heroine, and wow, it’s a fantastic indie RPG! It really captures that classic SNES RPG feel I grew up with, but it’s been updated with all the quality-of-life improvements we expect in modern games. I loved exploring the different planets and towns – everything is so beautifully detailed and full of life. The characters are really memorable, and the story kept me guessing with some cool twists. Honestly, I had a blast! The animated cutscenes are gorgeous, and it’s seriously impressive work from Zeboyd Games – especially as it’s only their second game.

One of the best things about Cosmic Star Heroine is its length – most players will finish it in about 12 hours. Even if you try to complete everything, it will only take around 20. The game respects your time, avoiding unnecessary padding. The combat is well-balanced, quests move at a good pace, and the environments are thoughtfully designed to be both engaging and visually impressive. Cosmic Star Heroine is a great choice for anyone looking for a concise, traditional JRPG that doesn’t sacrifice style or depth.

4. Artis Impact

Artis Impact, released in 2025, is a hidden gem among JRPGs and one of my favorites. It’s a gorgeous game with a surprisingly deep story, offering both funny and heartfelt moments. The game features a memorable cast of characters and interesting places to explore. What sets it apart is its mix of life simulation and classic turn-based battles. You can get lost in side activities, or focus on the main story, which is engaging and can be completed in a weekend.

You can finish Artis Impact in about 8 hours, though it took me closer to 15 to complete everything and fully appreciate its incredible world. It’s one of the shorter JRPGs available, but don’t let that fool you – it’s full of truly excellent gameplay and ideas that you’ll really enjoy. If you’re still unsure, there’s a free demo with its own unique story. It takes about an hour to play and gives you a good idea of what the full game has to offer.

3. Super Mario RPG

Despite being a fantastic JRPG and one of the best on the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario RPG doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. It feels different from the core Mario games, but in a good way! Like the Paper Mario series, it perfectly captures the spirit of Mario and blends it with a classic JRPG format. It’s a real disappointment that Nintendo never made more games like this, as it’s one of the strongest Mario spin-offs out there.

The Nintendo Switch remake, released in 2023, typically takes about 12 hours to complete. While there are some optional side quests, it’s a relatively short and enjoyable game perfect for a weekend. This remake is the best and easiest way to experience Super Mario RPG, though the original game is also excellent if you can find it. Either way, players will find themselves immersed in a charming and surprisingly heartfelt world.

2. Chrono Trigger

While you could easily spend a long weekend playing Chrono Trigger, it’s still worth including on this list. Compared to other JRPGs of its time—and especially those that came later—it’s a relatively short game. Don’t let that fool you, though—it’s still a deeply emotional and engaging experience. Chrono Trigger is widely considered one of the best JRPGs ever made, thanks to its compelling story and unforgettable characters. It was also remarkably innovative for its time, introducing gameplay features that wouldn’t become common in the genre for years.

You can finish Chrono Trigger in about 17 hours if you play quickly, but a more relaxed and enjoyable experience with the main story will likely take around 22 hours. It took me even longer to complete everything my first time, though I’ve beaten it much faster since then. Chrono Trigger is a must-play JRPG for everyone, and while a remake similar to Final Fantasy 7 would be amazing, the original game is still absolutely worth playing.

1. Granblue Fantasy: Relink

If you’re looking for a fantastic short JRPG to play over a weekend, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a top pick. It offers a diverse roster of 22 characters, each with unique abilities, alongside challenging boss fights, expansive environments, and plenty of gear to create. You can even play with friends! Plus, there’s a ton of content to keep you busy long after you finish the main story, all supported by a beautiful soundtrack and a truly memorable ending.

You can enjoy the core of Granblue Fantasy: Relink in about 15 hours. The main story is relatively short, and while there’s plenty of optional content to keep you playing longer if you enjoy it, it’s not required. I highly recommend sticking with it if you get hooked! But if you’re looking for a fantastic, action-packed JRPG experience to play over a weekend, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a perfect pick.
