A 60-Year-Old Forgotten Doctor Who Classic is Streaming Free on Tubi

I was so excited to discover a Doctor Who movie from 1960 is now available on Tubi! While Doctor Who is famous for being one of the longest-running sci-fi shows ever, I think it was the Daleks who truly made the show a hit. The 1960s were totally dominated by “Dalekmania,” and those adventures were incredible – the Daleks even chased the Doctor all over time and space! It’s cool to know Peter Cushing played the Doctor in film versions of some of the original stories with William Hartnell.

You can now watch Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. for free on Tubi. The film stars Peter Cushing, Roberta Tovey, Jill Curzon, and Bernard Cribbins, and is based on a classic “Doctor Who” story. It begins with policeman Tom Campbell (played by Cribbins) accidentally entering the Doctor’s time machine, thinking it’s a regular police box. Through his eyes, viewers are introduced to the Doctor (as Cushing’s character was known) and their mission to save humanity from the Daleks in the distant future.

Dalek Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. is a Key Part of Doctor Who History

The Daleks are famous for appearing in countless Doctor Who episodes, but the films starring Peter Cushing offered a unique experience. They were among the first times viewers could see the Daleks in color – the TV series didn’t switch to color until 1970, when Jon Pertwee became the Doctor. This film is faster-paced and more polished than the earlier Dr. Who and the Daleks movie, and benefited from better direction, even if it wasn’t a critical success. It didn’t need to be; it was made for the schoolchildren who were already enthusiastically playing out Dalek battles with shouts of “Exterminate!”

Peter Cushing’s version of Doctor Who isn’t usually considered part of the official story – though the show often bends that rule. However, Bernard Cribbins is definitely part of the established canon; he reappeared in Doctor Who in the 2000s as Wilfred Mott, Donna Noble’s grandfather. He last appeared in the 2023 special “Wild Blue Yonder,” filming his scenes shortly before his death. Cribbins’ presence alone makes Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. a must-see.

Comparing Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. to the original story is really interesting. The TV version is clearly superior in almost every way – except for the special effects – because it allows the plot to develop more fully. The Robomen, humans controlled by the Daleks, feel like an early inspiration for the Cybermen, another iconic Doctor Who enemy that debuted on television the same year. Peter Cushing gives a fantastic performance as “Dr. Who,” capturing the spirit of William Hartnell’s portrayal without directly imitating him. It’s a worthwhile watch, especially if you’re interested in seeing how the two versions differ.
