Why California Schemin’ could be James McAvoy’s boldest move yet!

Is James McAvoy taking his biggest risk yet? After appearing in many major films with acclaimed directors, ‘California Dreamin” marks the actor’s first time directing a movie.

This movie tells the unbelievable true story of two friends from Dundee, Scotland, who tricked the music world. They pretended to be a famous rap group from California, successfully landing a record deal and even appearing on MTV before their deception was exposed in a dramatic and public way. James McAvoy’s boldest move yet?

A documentary about the true story behind the group, called “The Great Hip Hop Hoax,” was released in 2013. Producer Danny Page explained that he approached several directors before sharing the idea and script with James McAvoy. He was delighted when McAvoy’s representative quickly responded, saying McAvoy would be happy to direct.

Interestingly, during the final concert scene, the filmmakers advertised the event expecting a small crowd. To their surprise, around 2,000 people actually came and stayed for the entire shoot, genuinely enjoying the performance. Their enthusiastic reactions in the film are completely real!

James McAvoy recently discussed his ambitions to direct films, and what he looks for in a script. He’s particularly interested in telling stories about working-class Scotland, and also talked about Scottish actors like Karen Gillan and the importance of making genuine, cinematic movies.
