
Stellar Blade has been a huge success, and it was clear from the very first trailer that it would be. The game’s stunning main character, its unique art style blending futuristic and gritty elements, and its emotionally resonant story reminiscent of Nier: Automata, immediately made it one of the most anticipated titles around.
Although the game doesn’t feel particularly original, heavily drawing from other titles, it’s still incredibly fun to play and visually stunning. It’s surprisingly satisfying and replayable, even considering the strange controversy surrounding it – a debate fueled by online claims that some game journalists unfairly criticize games featuring attractive female characters. Despite some questioning its score of 81 on Metacritic, the game clearly has its appeal.
I’d rather not dwell on negatives right now. I want to highlight how Stellar Blade has become a real success story in the gaming world. It’s a single-player game that’s sold incredibly well, attracting players worldwide, and it’s done so by sticking to its own vision instead of following current trends that many feel are harming Western game development. Despite being a big-budget game, it feels refreshing and different, and that’s really important.
Why Stellar Blade Isn’t Your Average Video Game Blockbuster

Shift Up is definitely aware of what’s popular in gaming, especially when it comes to mobile games. Their title Nikke: Goddess of Victory features very noticeable character designs – think a lot of movement and curves – which makes Stellar Blade seem quite tame in comparison. They have other projects in the works, like Destiny Child and Project Spirit, that appear to be going for a similar style, showing they’re currently involved in a variety of different games.
This South Korean studio, though new to the scene, clearly recognizes the need to balance ambitious, large-scale games with smaller mobile projects that generate ongoing revenue. While I understand the gaming industry is a business, it’s also a creative medium, and that artistic value shouldn’t be overlooked. Despite some imperfections, Stellar Blade feels uniquely creative and has the potential to become something truly special in a future installment.
This sequel has the potential to be as impressive as Uncharted 2, offering a significant leap forward in both gameplay and story. While the first game borrowed heavily from other titles, the developers are now well-positioned to develop their appealing characters, refine the gameplay, and create a truly standout action game. It’s likely to feature revealing character designs and appeal to a broad audience, but if that helps ensure the future of strong, single-player games, that’s a positive thing.
I became even more optimistic about Shift Up’s approach when they acquired the new development studio of Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and many other beloved games. Shift Up seems to recognize a crucial element for success: trusting talented creators and giving them the necessary time and resources. This kind of support is increasingly rare in the current gaming landscape, which is unfortunately filled with unsuccessful live-service games, layoffs, and studio shutdowns.
What Game Is Shinji Mikami’s Unbound Making Right Now?
As a big fan of both Hyung Tae Kim, the CEO of Shift Up, and Shinji Mikami, I was so excited to hear they’re working together! It sounds like they both really want to make amazing games, and they realized that combining their talents and resources was the smart thing to do, especially with how the gaming industry is changing right now. It just makes sense for them to team up and create something special.
According to the announcement, what connects these two companies isn’t location or typical business sense. It’s a mutual belief that great creative ideas and excellent work are essential together. Unbound operates by developing both smaller, innovative projects and a major, ambitious game simultaneously, ensuring they can always pursue creative risks without compromising quality.
Mikami also shared his excitement about the partnership, saying he’s thrilled to be working with Hyung-Tae Kim, the CEO of Shift Up, and their entire team. He feels a strong creative connection with Kim and believes this collaboration will allow both companies to prioritize making fun, high-quality games that fans will love. They’re committed to exceeding expectations by combining their strengths.
Details are still scarce about Mikami’s next project, but the announcement video suggests it will be another apocalyptic tale with supernatural elements. A recent piece of artwork and the end of the video show a massive, winged creature destroying a city, hinting at the scale of the coming disaster.
I’m not sure what this new game is about, but I’m really excited because Shinji Mikami is leading the project. It’s great that he has the creative control and funding he needs to bring his vision to life. Unlike some other studios, where funding was pulled despite initial success, I’m optimistic this project will be different. The anticipated popularity of Stellar Blade 2 and the ongoing revenue from their mobile games suggest this studio is in a stable position.

I didn’t love the first Stellar Blade, and the next one needs to be more than just a copy of Nier: Automata with more revealing outfits. However, the developers at Shift Up have shown they can create exciting, single-player games, and I hope they inspire other studios to do the same. I’m especially excited because this could mean Shinji Mikami will create another fantastic game, and I’m fully supportive of that.
