A popular anime series currently streaming on Crunchyroll has completely changed its opening credits after admitting to using artificial intelligence and receiving strong negative reactions from fans. As the spring anime season gets underway with new episodes, several major franchises are returning, including the long-awaited fourth season of Ascendance of Bookworm, which hasn’t had new episodes in four years. However, the return hasn’t been without its challenges for this popular fantasy series.

They apologized to fans and announced they were creating a revised opening for future broadcasts and home video releases. The updated opening is now available on streaming platforms and includes the necessary corrections.

I was really glad to see that WIT Studio listened to fan feedback about the opening sequence! Some people noticed AI-generated backgrounds, and they’ve actually been updated in the new version. But what’s even more interesting is that WIT Studio also shared their overall policy on AI. Basically, they’re keeping a close eye on new tech, but they’ve decided not to use generative AI in their animation work – and that includes this project. This is especially unfortunate because a new animation team, WIT Studio, is now handling a major story arc.
