A popular anime series currently streaming on Crunchyroll has completely changed its opening credits after admitting to using artificial intelligence and receiving strong negative reactions from fans. As the spring anime season gets underway with new episodes, several major franchises are returning, including the long-awaited fourth season of Ascendance of Bookworm, which hasn’t had new episodes in four years. However, the return hasn’t been without its challenges for this popular fantasy series.
The latest season of Ascendance of a Bookworm premiered with a new opening, but fans quickly noticed something was off and suspected it was created using AI. After looking into the claims, WIT Studio confirmed that AI-generated content was used. Now, the anime has a completely new opening sequence, which you can watch here.
Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 4 Replaces Opening After A.I. Use Controversy
After concerns were raised, WIT Studio officially stated they found that AI-generated content was used in the initial version of the opening sequence for Season 4 of Ascendance of a Bookworm. They apologized to fans and announced they were creating a revised opening for future broadcasts and home video releases. The updated opening is now available on streaming platforms and includes the necessary corrections.
I was really glad to see that WIT Studio listened to fan feedback about the opening sequence! Some people noticed AI-generated backgrounds, and they’ve actually been updated in the new version. But what’s even more interesting is that WIT Studio also shared their overall policy on AI. Basically, they’re keeping a close eye on new tech, but they’ve decided not to use generative AI in their animation work – and that includes this project. It’s cool to see them being so upfront about it!
What Does This Mean for Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 4?
WIT Studio acknowledged that the recent issue happened because of problems with how they managed and checked production. They fully accept responsibility and sincerely apologize to fans, the original creator, and everyone involved. They also confirmed that, so far, only one instance of AI-generated imagery has been found and that future episodes will not include it.
Despite the popularity of Ascendance of a Bookworm, the new season is off to a disappointing start. This is especially unfortunate because a new animation team, WIT Studio, is now handling a major story arc. While this likely won’t drastically change fans’ opinions of the series this spring, it might receive less attention compared to other popular isekai anime currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
