Former Bethesda Executive Says Studio Isn’t Part of Anything “Authentic”, “Genuine” Anymore

Pete Hines, a former executive at Bethesda, has stated that since Microsoft acquired the company, Bethesda has lost its originality and true identity. In an interview with Firezide Chat, Hines also admitted he thought about leaving after the acquisition, feeling unable to effectively lead the company in the way he believed was necessary.

He explained he stayed because he felt a responsibility to the company. He’d realized he was needed, but also felt unable to make the changes he believed were necessary to keep things running smoothly, protect the team, and preserve the successful video game development and publishing business they’d built.

I realized I couldn’t fulfill what I believed was my responsibility to maintain the company’s position as one of the most effective publishers in the industry. When I saw it being harmed and poorly managed – frankly, mistreated – I decided I wouldn’t stand by and watch it happen.

Later in the interview, he shared more details about his experiences at the company before he left. He mentioned that he had voiced concerns internally about why Call of Duty continued to be available on multiple platforms even after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, especially since games like Starfield from Bethesda were made exclusive to Xbox consoles. Interestingly, Microsoft has since changed its approach and now plans to release more games on multiple platforms instead of limiting them to just Xbox.

Hines described the period as the lowest point in his career. He explained that it was difficult joining a company he admired and whose employees he respected, only to discover how things truly operated behind the scenes.

Look, anyone can say things, but for me, it’s all about what happens after the talk. Do people actually follow through on their promises? Or is it just empty talk that’s forgotten the moment they walk away? That’s never been the way things worked at Bethesda, and it’s something I really value – actually doing what you say you will.

Hines finished by discussing Bethesda’s situation now that Microsoft owns it. He admitted they didn’t fully deliver on all their previous promises, saying they fell quite short, but that was their goal. He emphasized their commitment to honesty and following through on commitments. However, he honestly believes Bethesda still isn’t operating with complete authenticity under Microsoft, which he says shouldn’t be unexpected.

In 2023, Hines announced he was leaving Bethesda to retire and pursue personal interests, spend time volunteering, and enjoy life more. You can find more about Hines and his career at Bethesda, including his thoughts on the memorable canvas bag issue with the launch of Fallout 76.
