As of Monday, April 13th, 2026, at 1:30 PM, many people on Reddit and other social media platforms are reporting that Sony is issuing refunds for Starfield on the PlayStation 5.
If players contact PlayStation support, they’re often able to get a refund, but it’s not automatic. Some refund requests are being denied for unclear reasons, and the process isn’t as widespread as when Sony offered refunds for Cyberpunk 2077.
This really highlights how common the problems with Starfield are. As we reported earlier, many players experienced crashes during the game’s launch weekend after spending a significant amount of time playing the sci-fi game.
Regarding Cyberpunk 2077, the PlayStation 5’s crash reporting system probably heavily influenced the game’s refund process. The constant stream of error reports provided clear evidence of significant problems with the game.
It’s likely Starfield will be the same – we’ve already submitted over 20 bug reports after only about 15 hours of playing.
Right now, everyone is looking to Bethesda for answers. Although not all players are experiencing crashes, it’s obvious a fix is needed. Starfield has been released for almost a week, and the developers haven’t yet addressed the issue.
Starfield players on both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro are experiencing frequent crashes, and the cause of the issue is currently unknown.
Let’s start by saying this doesn’t seem to be a problem for everyone. During our testing for the Starfield PS5 review, we didn’t run into any major issues.
More and more players are reporting crashes with the game on Reddit, especially as it’s been out for its first weekend on PlayStation consoles.
Okay, so things are getting really frustrating. I actually started playing this game on Friday night, and I’m running into crashes every time I try to explore one of the main cities. It’s happening consistently, which is a huge bummer because it’s making it hard to actually play the game.
We did some testing and found that your graphics settings seem to be causing the crashes. On the PlayStation 5 Pro, we tried all the different visual modes – Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance – with the frame rate unlocked, and we consistently experienced crashes in each one.
The game only ran smoothly in the city when we limited the frame rate to 60. But then, we started experiencing frequent crashes while exploring outdoor areas.
We fixed the issue by turning off PSSR 2, the PS5 Pro’s new upscaling feature that uses AI, in the console’s display settings. Since then, we haven’t experienced any crashes while playing Starfield for several hours.
We’ve noticed this issue ourselves, but it seems to be widespread. People on Reddit have tried many different solutions, but none of them have worked so far.
Disabling PSSR 2 also doesn’t fix crashes when playing the sci-fi RPG on the standard console hardware.
In short, there’s something very wrong with Starfield right now.
Even the experts at Digital Foundry have been experiencing crashes while playing Starfield. In their technical review, they noted that the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro crashed fairly often during testing – something they didn’t see on Xbox Series X/S at launch. These crashes completely freeze the game, forcing players to restart their console. They encountered this problem in various settings and configurations, meaning there’s no clear way to prevent it.
Hopefully, Bethesda will fix the issues with Starfield quickly. The game came out on PlayStation 5 on April 7th and hasn’t been updated since.
Bethesda is notorious for releasing video games with significant bugs, but it’s especially frustrating that Starfield – released on PlayStation 5 almost three years after its initial launch on Xbox and PC – is still plagued by crashes. It’s hard to believe they haven’t fixed these issues after so long.
