The Euphoria family will always keep Eric Dane and Angus Cloud’s memory alive.
The latest and expectedly last season of the HBO drama, created by Sam Levinson, began on April 12th. This followed the death of Eric Dane at age 53 after a fight with ALS two months prior. The episode started with a tribute to Dane, displaying his photo and the words, “In remembrance of Eric Dane.”
The episode concluded with a tribute to people the show had lost. Along with Eric, the “In Memoriam” segment honored Kevin Turen, an executive producer, and Angus, the actor who played Fezco, both of whom passed away unexpectedly in 2023.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always amazed by dedication and creativity, and the story behind Eric Dane’s role in Euphoria season three is truly inspiring. Eric received an ALS diagnosis not long before filming started, but Sam Levinson was determined to include him as Cal Jacobs. They worked closely together, adapting to Eric’s symptoms and cleverly scheduling all his scenes to be filmed in a single, incredibly efficient day. It just goes to show what’s possible with collaboration and a real commitment to storytelling – especially when working with someone like Jacob Elordi, who plays his son, Nate.
Before filming began, Eric called to share the heartbreaking news that he had been diagnosed with ALS, Sam revealed to Extra. They had many conversations about life and its meaning. Sam shared that they had a deep connection and reassured Eric, ‘No matter what, we’ll figure it out. I believe we can make this work.’
Sam explained that when the actor arrived, he could tell he was speaking with a slight slur. The actor admitted as much, so Sam came up with a solution: they would stage the scene to look like he’d been drinking beer all night. The actor loved the idea, and Sam felt his performance was brilliant.

The trailer for season three reveals Cal attending Nate’s wedding to Cassie (Sydney Sweeney). This will be Eric’s last time appearing on screen.
Angus, who tragically passed away from a drug overdose in 2023 at just 25 years old, played the character Fezco. The show left Fezco’s fate uncertain after a police raid on his home resulted in his brother’s death and left him seriously injured before his arrest.
Despite the character facing a potentially fatal situation, Sam decided to keep Fezco alive in the HBO series. In the season premiere, Rue (Zendaya) informs Lexi (Maude Apatow), Fezco’s girlfriend, that he’s still alive, though he’s currently in prison serving a 30-year sentence.
Sam wanted to allow the character Angus to experience a life the actor—who had openly discussed his battles with addiction—himself hadn’t been able to live.

The showrunner told Entertainment Weekly that losing the actor was incredibly difficult, especially after working so hard to support him during his illness. They explained that they felt a responsibility to keep his character alive on screen, even if they couldn’t save him in real life.
Sam also shared with the publication how Angus’s death had a profound impact on him.
Losing Angus… it absolutely broke me. Everyone says you brace for it with addiction, but it wasn’t sadness, it was rage. Rage for him, and for every other young person whose life has been stolen by fentanyl. This last season? It became my obsession, my way to keep his memory alive and honor all those kids who never got a second chance. I had to tell a story where, even in the darkest places, you could still feel a glimmer of hope, a little bit of light. It was the only way I knew how to cope, honestly.
