The Duffer Brothers gained fame with their Netflix sci-fi series, which concluded on December 31, 2026. Their next project for Netflix is shaping up to be an excellent successor.
The new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, comes from the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, who are now executive producers. With a new deal taking them to Paramount, they still had several projects at Netflix to launch, and The Boroughs is one of them. Netflix recently released the trailer for the show, which is being described as a more mature version of Stranger Things, and it’s set to premiere on May 21st.
The Boroughs Introduces a New Upside Down
The creators of Stranger Things, known as the Duffer Brothers, often choose small towns with a mysterious atmosphere as the setting for their stories. After using the made-up town of Hawkins, Indiana, in Stranger Things, they’ve decided to set their next series in New Mexico.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the eight-episode sci-fi series The Boroughs stars Alfred Molina in the leading role.
The show takes place in a retirement community that appears perfect on the surface. Sam, played by Molina, is sent there by his family, but things aren’t what they seem. After a frightening experience, Sam teams up with a group of quirky residents to expose a hidden and dangerous secret. They discover their retirement isn’t as peaceful as it looks, and they’re much tougher than anyone realizes.
The creators of the new show, known as the Duffer Brothers, have acknowledged that it shares some similarities with their hit series, Stranger Things. They explained that while the characters in their new show, The Boroughs, are a bit older, they’re also a charming group of outsiders. The Duffer Brothers are excited for audiences to experience a story that is both frightening, humorous, and emotionally resonant.
Addiss and Matthews explained to Tudum that they always envisioned The Boroughs as a story that would be frightening, intriguing, thrilling, and moving all at the same time. Creating a world that could successfully blend these different feelings was a key challenge, which is why collaborating with the Duffer Brothers—known for expertly combining emotional depth with horror—was such a great experience.
Joining Esposito in The Boroughs are acclaimed actors Geena Davis (known for Thelma & Louise and Beetlejuice), Alfre Woodard (Clemency, Salem’s Lot), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story, This Is Us), Clarke Peters (The Wire, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and Bill Pullman (The Sinner, Independence Day). The show’s cast also includes Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg, Rafael Casal, Dee Wallace, Ed Begley Jr., and other talented performers.
The Boroughs premieres on Netflix on May 21.
