The first PlayStation launched in 1994, and it was a time of big changes for game developers. They were exploring what the new, more powerful hardware could do, moving beyond simple 2D graphics. This experimentation led to some unusual and sometimes flawed game ideas, but they offered a memorable experience for gamers eager for something new and exciting. A handful of these particularly strange titles really stand out as the weirdest games on the PlayStation.
Here are the six strangest games on the PlayStation 1.
6) Screaming Mad George’s ParanoiaScape

ParanoiaScape is a unique pinball game presented in first-person 3D, created by Japanese artist Screaming Mad George. George is famous for his incredibly detailed and disturbing special effects work, and that same dark creativity is on full display in this game.
This game is intensely unsettling and definitely not for everyone. While the pinball gameplay itself is well-done, it’s hard to focus on it because of the constant stream of disturbing visuals. If you can stomach the graphic imagery, you’ll find a really good pinball experience underneath.
5) Swagman

Inspired by films like Nightmare on Elm Street, Swagman is a puzzle-adventure horror game where you must stop a villain who traps people in their deepest fears. The game’s visuals have a Tim Burton-esque style, which might suggest a lighter take on horror, but don’t be fooled – it’s genuinely scary.
This game delivers genuine scares that will catch you off guard. It features a unique blend of gameplay, allowing you to switch between reality and dreamscapes, and combines action-packed combat and puzzles reminiscent of Zelda. You’ll even occasionally transform into a monstrous creature yourself.
4) LSD: Dream Emulator

The name LSD: Dream Emulator says it all. This unique game, originally released only in Japan, is inspired by a ten-year dream journal kept by someone at the game company Asmik Ace Entertainment. It quickly became known for its incredibly psychedelic and mind-bending graphics.
Don’t expect a traditional game with a lot of action in LSD: Dream Emulator. It was designed to feel like wandering through a dream, and the creator, Osamu Sato, was more focused on artistic expression with the PlayStation. It’s less about doing things and more about the overall experience.
3) Eggs of Steel

The game Eggs of Steel originally came out as a special offer only available at Blockbuster Video stores. While that’s not the only reason it’s a strange game, it’s a neat piece of video game history. It’s amazing to think Blockbuster once had enough influence to get games made exclusively for them – things have certainly changed!
In Eggs of Steel, you control Charlie, a walking, talking egg trapped in a chaotic factory. The game combines puzzle-solving with platforming action, creating an enjoyable adventure, especially considering its low price. The game’s bizarre setting is a highlight, and it’s packed with egg-related puns. While the humor might not appeal to everyone, pun enthusiasts will absolutely love it.
2) Spider: The Video Game

You’re not mistaken – the image shows a spider holding a shotgun in one hand and a large knife in the other! It’s a truly unsettling sight. Aside from the cover art of the game Spider, this is from a unique 2.5D platformer developed by Boss Game Studios.
You play as Dr. Michael Kelly, a scientist who’s created a device allowing minds to be transferred into robotic insects. When his lab is invaded, Kelly is forced to transfer his consciousness into one of his spiders. As the spider, you’ll use a variety of upgrades – even a shotgun – to survive in dangerous environments full of enemies. Let’s hope this game never gets remastered; a more realistic spider might be too much to handle!
1) Incredible Crisis

Incredible Crisis lets you play as a typical Japanese family, but with a bizarre twist! You’ll face a series of incredibly strange challenges, all in a race against the clock to make it home in time for grandma’s birthday.
You’ll face a series of wild challenges, like a rhythm-based exercise similar to Dance Dance Revolution, escaping UFOs, surviving a bank robbery, and even giving a massage on a Ferris wheel! Incredible Crisis is chaotic and unpredictable, and that’s exactly what makes it a fantastic PlayStation game.
