Man, I never thought we’d see another Mario movie after that disaster in ’93. Nintendo was seriously burned and shut Hollywood out for thirty years! But then, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie totally blew everyone away – over $1.3 billion worldwide! It proved that if they found the right team, Nintendo properties could work on the big screen. Now? It’s a full-on Nintendo universe takeover! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already crushing it with over $629 million in just two weekends, and Illumination is hinting at Star Fox and Donkey Kong spin-offs. But it doesn’t stop there! Nintendo and Sony are secretly working on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie directed by Wes Ball, the guy who did the new Planet of the Apes film. It’s wild to think how far things have come!
As a huge Zelda fan, I was so excited to hear from Sony’s CinemaCon presentation that filming on The Legend of Zelda movie is officially done! That means post-production is starting, and honestly, that’s usually when we get our first glimpse of the movie. Studios often release a teaser trailer around this time, even though the special effects aren’t totally finished yet, just to build hype. Considering the movie is set to come out May 7, 2027, it feels like we might finally get to see Hyrule come to life on screen in the next few months – I’m already counting down the days!
The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Is Equal Parts Risky and Exciting

The Legend of Zelda is a hugely successful franchise for Nintendo, selling over 150 million copies across its many games. But being popular doesn’t guarantee it will work as a movie. The games pose some tricky challenges for adaptation. For example, the main character, Link, is intentionally silent, allowing players to imagine themselves as him. Giving him a voice could upset longtime fans. Also, Zelda games are known for their puzzles and the freedom to explore, which are experiences best suited for playing a game, not watching a movie.
Okay, so even though making this movie is a huge challenge, I’m actually feeling pretty optimistic about some of the early choices they’re making. The director, Ball, has said he wants a more realistic look instead of going all-out with CGI, and that’s exactly what this series needs – it’s never just been about flashy effects. Apparently, he’s looking at Studio Ghibli films for inspiration, which is perfect! That studio always manages to balance big adventures with those beautiful, peaceful moments. And the first photos of Link and Zelda? Amazing! Link’s outfit is clearly inspired by Twilight Princess with that darker green and leather, and Zelda’s robes are so Breath of the Wild – elegant and blue. It’s so cool to see costumes that feel instantly familiar to fans, but also don’t look fake or cheap like some other video game movies have. They really seem to be getting the tone right!
Filming for The Legend of Zelda took place in New Zealand, the same country Peter Jackson famously used for the Lord of the Rings movies. New Zealand’s stunning scenery is already well-known for epic fantasy films, and choosing it for The Legend of Zelda suggests the filmmakers are aiming for a similar grand and immersive feel. Leaked videos have led to rumors that Dichen Lachman, known for her role in Severance, might play Impa, but Nintendo and Sony haven’t confirmed this. Overall, these details indicate a production team that is treating the original game with a lot of respect. The first trailer should give us a better idea of whether the movie lives up to that initial impression.
The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.
I’m so hyped to finally see Link and Zelda come to life in a live-action movie! I’m heading over to the ComicBook Forum to chat about it with other fans – come join me and let’s talk all things Zelda!
