Why Taylor Swift Fans Think Lena Dunham Inspired This Lyric

Someone told Taylor Swift this adage, and fans are beginning to think it was Lena Dunham

Almost two years after Taylor Swift released The Tortured Poets Department, Lena Dunham, the creator of Girls, has suggested she may be the person who gave Taylor the helpful advice mentioned in the song “Guilty as Sin?”

Lena shared a piece of advice her father often gave her and her siblings growing up: ‘It’s not about having bad thoughts, but about not acting on them.’ She noted that many people believe you should keep negative thoughts private, but her father disagreed with that idea.

Regardless of where Taylor first heard the idea, she referenced it in her song “Guilty As Sin?”, which is about being drawn to someone you know is wrong for you.

In her song from Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift shares the idea that thoughts themselves aren’t harmful—it’s what you do that matters. She follows this with lyrics describing intense, consuming fantasies: ‘These fatal fantasies weigh me down, take everything from me—we’ve already lived it all out in my mind.’

Because Taylor and Lena have been friends for a long time, fans quickly connected Taylor’s new song to a recent interview Lena gave.

One fan wondered if the song finally revealed who “someone” refers to, posting the question alongside a clip of Lena’s interview.

A fan on X pointed out that Lena Dunham seems to have inspired two popular Taylor Swift songs – “You Are In Love” and “Guilty as Sin” – referencing her past relationship with Jack Antonoff.

Taylor Swift generally lets fans interpret the meaning of her songs, but she has confirmed that her song “You Are In Love” from the album 1989 is about the past relationship between Lena and Jack. The couple dated for over five years before splitting in 2017. Since then, Lena married Luis Felber in 2021, and Jack married Margaret Qualley in 2023.

Taylor explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2015 that she wrote the song with her friend Jack Antonoff, who was dating another friend, Lena. The song is basically her take on their relationship – observing how things unfolded and realizing, ‘This is what falling in love looked like for them.’

Prior to the release of The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor Swift had only definitively written one song about her then-boyfriend (now fiancé) on the Kansas City Chiefs—aside from the updated version of “Karma” performed on The Eras Tour. That song, “So High School,” was fittingly used as the background music for the couple’s engagement announcement on Instagram in August 2025.

Fans have theorized that the song “The Alchemy,” from The Tortured Poets Department, references Travis Kelce due to its football and high school imagery. However, the song “So High School” contains a more direct reference with the lines: “Are you going to marry, kiss or kill me? / It’s just a game but really / I’m betting on all three, for us two.”

You know, back in 2016, I was chatting with Travis on AfterBuzzTV, and we played a round of ‘Marry, Kiss, Kill.’ When I asked him about Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry, he didn’t hesitate! He said Taylor would definitely be the one he’d kiss.

Travis loves the song, and even though he’s a big Taylor Swift fan and knows the competition is fierce, he considers it his absolute favorite.

He jokingly admitted to Access Hollywood in 2024 that he was probably a bit biased when making the decision.

Taylor Swift seemingly wrote several songs on her album The Tortured Poets Department about a brief relationship with The 1975’s frontman in 2023. This includes the title track, which also mentions their friend and frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff.

Fans speculate that songs like “Fortnight,” “Down Bad,” and “But Daddy I Love Him” are also about Matty Healy, with the last one seemingly addressing the criticism Taylor faced for dating him.

Matty Healy told paparazzi, according to Entertainment Tonight in 2024, that he hadn’t heard the album, but thought it was likely good. However, his mother, Denise Welch, publicly criticized the idea that the songs were about his breakup.

The Loose Woman cohost explained on Watch What Happens Live that someone was told not to speak about something, but then went on to write an entire album about it.

Throughout their six-year relationship, Taylor Swift wrote numerous songs inspired by and even created with Joe Alwyn. Soon after they started dating publicly in 2016, she released the album Reputation, which featured several tracks clearly about him, including “Call It What You Want,” “Dress,” and “King of My Heart.”

Taylor Swift’s album Lover features the song “Cornelia Street,” which is named after an apartment she lived in during the beginning of her relationship. Fans also believe other songs are about her romance with Joe Alwyn, including “invisible string” from folklore and “Sweet Nothing” and its bonus track “You’re Losing Me” from Midnights. Producer Jack Antonoff confirmed that “You’re Losing Me” was actually written two years before Taylor and Joe broke up in 2023.

Joe is among the collaborators who help Taylor write her songs. He’s credited on tracks from the albums folklore and evermore, including hits like “betty,” “champagne problems,” and “exile,” but uses the pen name William Bowery.

The cowriting came about completely by chance during lockdown,” the former student told GQ in 2022. “It started with just playing around on the piano, singing poorly, and someone overhearing. Then we thought, ‘Why not see if we could finish a song together?’

After a controversial phone call leaked in 2016—which was later found to be edited—between Kanye and Taylor about a lyric on his album, The Life of Pablo, Taylor has responded to the couple with pointed remarks on several occasions.

In 2024, Taylor Swift released the song “thanK you aIMee,” which many believe is about Kim Kardashian, as the capitalized letters in the title spell out her name. She also hinted at Kanye West on another version of the same album, subtly capitalizing “YE” within the track’s title.

Before TTPD, Taylor had already released songs referencing her conflicts with Kim and Kanye regarding the “Famous” dispute. One example is “Mad Woman” from folklore, where she sings about how people will team up against someone they want to destroy, with lyrics like, “Women like hunting witches too / Doing your dirtiest work for you / It’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together.”

Taylor Swift’s first single from her Reputation album, “Look What You Made Me Do,” referenced the public drama she was experiencing. Similarly, her song “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” explores the pain of a friendship falling apart after an attempt at reconciliation.

As a longtime observer of pop culture, it’s clear that Taylor’s connection with Kanye goes way back – all the way to that infamous moment at the 2009 VMAs. Remember when he interrupted her acceptance speech? It was a huge deal! She actually addressed it in her song “Innocent” from the Speak Now album, essentially offering forgiveness. The fallout was massive, even prompting a response from then-President Barack Obama, which really shows how much attention it got.

In the song, Taylor reflects on facing criticism, singing, “It’s OK / Life is a tough crowd.” He also touches on his age at the time of the VMAs, adding, “32 and still growing up now / Who you are is more important than past mistakes / You’re still someone good at heart.”

Though their romance was brief, lasting only a summer in 2016, Taylor Swift’s relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston clearly influenced her music. Fans believe songs like “Getaway Car” and “High Infidelity” detail the timeline of their relationship, which overlapped with her split from Calvin Harris, whom she dated for a year before ending things in June 2016 – the same month rumors about her and Tom began.

Both songs explore the idea that a relationship built on a foundation of even a little bit of cheating is destined to fail.

Fans believe Taylor Swift wrote “Getaway Car” about her relationships with Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston, but none of the three have confirmed whether the song is actually about them.

Despite Taylor Swift denying she based her songs on her relationship with the former One Direction member, many fans believe there are hidden references to the “Watermelon Sugar” singer throughout her album 1989.

Fans widely believe the songs “Style” and “Out of the Woods,” along with the bonus track “Wonderland,” are about Harry Styles. The reference to a “Cheshire cat smile” in “Wonderland” particularly sparked this idea, as many interpret it as a connection to his hometown of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England.

The song “Is It Over Now?,” originally recorded in 1989, clearly captures the moment Taylor realized her relationship with Harry was finished.

She references the well-known January 2013 photo taken after her and her partner reportedly split while singing, “Blue dress on a boat.” She then adds, “Your new girl is my clone.”

In the song “Now That We Don’t Talk,” she brings up their failed vacation once more and playfully criticizes Harry’s musical preferences with the lyrics, “I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock / Or that I’d enjoy being on a huge yacht.”

Taylor dated several other celebrities from Britain after Harry, but he was her first British boyfriend. Because London is mentioned in some of her older songs, like “Come Back, Be Here” and “Message in a Bottle” from the album Red, many fans believe those songs are also about Harry.

Taylor Swift didn’t come up with the ideas for her 1989 album all on her own. Many fans think the song “Bad Blood” is about Katy Perry, as Taylor hinted in a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone that it was inspired by another female artist who tried to ruin her concert tour.

Taylor explained that the feud began when some of her dancers joined Katy Perry’s tour. She clarified it wasn’t a personal conflict over a relationship, but a business disagreement. She said, ‘It felt like we were just outright enemies.’

However, Taylor maintained she penned the song simply to get some feelings off her chest.

She told Rolling Stone that her goal wasn’t to start rumors. She hoped people would connect with the story if they’d ever felt betrayed themselves.

Honestly, the song really kicked things off – a full-blown feud, actually. The day after Rolling Stone published their article, Katy took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted this pointed message: “Watch out for Regina George in sheep’s clothing.” It felt like a direct response, and things haven’t been the same since!

The singers resolved their differences in 2019, and Katy Perry later appeared in Taylor Swift’s music video for “You Need to Calm Down.”

Taylor Swift also enjoys writing fanfiction. Before her album Red came out, she met Ethel Kennedy while dating her grandson, Conor. Inspired by Ethel and her late husband, Taylor wrote the song “Starlight” imagining a romantic date night for the couple.

Taylor Swift said she was inspired to write ‘Starlight’ after seeing a photo of Ethel and Bobby Kennedy as teenagers. She didn’t know the story behind the picture, but it made her imagine they were having a wonderful evening, and she wrote the song based on that idea.

In response to the nod, Ethel told the Cape Cod Times, “She is just sensational, inside and out.”

Many fans believe Taylor Swift’s hit breakup song, “All Too Well”—especially the extended 10-minute version—is about actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The song includes details that match their brief 2010 relationship, like references to fall, a family home, and a scarf. Jake’s sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is a well-known actress, and the couple reportedly shared a striped Gucci scarf during their time together.

Taylor Swift seemingly referenced her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal in songs like “The Last Time,” “We Are Never Getting Back Together,” and “I Bet You Think About Me” (from her Red album’s vault). These songs mention details about his musical preferences and privileged upbringing.

Although many people think the album Red was largely based on Jake, he publicly denied any connection to it after the 2021 re-release.

“It’s about her relationship with her fans,” he told Esquire in 2022. “It is her expression.”

Taylor agreed with Jake, explaining that she’d watched “All Too Well” evolve into something more meaningful than just a song about a breakup.

It was amazing to see! When the song was released, our fans immediately connected with it and started sharing how much they loved it. It quickly became their favorite from the Red album – within just a few months of the album coming out, they’d declared it the most important song on the record. It was a really special moment to witness that organic connection.

Many fans believe Taylor Swift’s song “The Manuscript” from The Tortured Poets Department is inspired by the effect her song “All Too Well” had on her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal.

When Taylor was nineteen, a significant part of her heart belonged to the musician behind “Gravity,” and he likely inspired songs on her Speak Now album, including “Dear John” and “The Story of Us.” Taylor has confirmed that both of those songs were about the same person.

In 2010, she told USA Today that her song ‘The Story of Us’ was inspired by seeing an ex-boyfriend at an awards show. They were seated near each other, and she felt an intense emotional connection. She wanted to ask him if the encounter was as painful for him as it was for her, but she remained silent, explaining that they both seemed to be protecting themselves emotionally.

Although Taylor Swift now says she no longer hides clues about her personal life in her music, fans discovered a hidden message in the original album notes for her song “Story of Us.” The notes, where Taylor used to write secret messages, spelled out “CMT Awards,” an event she and John Mayer both attended in 2010.

As for where “Dear John” is concerned? John himself had to respond to the brazen shots fired.

Oh my god, he told Rolling Stone this back in 2012, and it still breaks my heart! He said, and I quote, “I didn’t deserve it.” Can you believe it? He’s gotten so much better at owning up to things now, but he genuinely believes he didn’t do anything to warrant that treatment. He called it a ‘really lousy thing for her to do,’ and honestly? He’s SO right. It was just awful, and he didn’t deserve any of it! I’ve re-read that interview a million times, and it still gets me every time.

Taylor Swift has moved past past conflicts. While she acknowledges she wasn’t always mature enough to handle things differently as a teenager, she’s now uninterested in dwelling on old drama. Before performing her song “Dear John” during The Eras Tour in 2023, she told her fans she’s let go of everything that happened when she was 19, except for the inspiration it gave her for her music and the positive memories created with others.

As she put it, “I do not care. We’ve all grown up. We’re good.”

Taylor Swift wrote the song “Back to December” about her relationship with actor Taylor Lautner, whom she dated in 2009. The song contains references to their time together, including a specific night in September when he saw her upset – an event that occurred at the 2009 VMAs. She also subtly acknowledged him in the song’s album booklet with the simple inscription, “Tay.”

Okay, so Taylor’s re-recording Speak Now and it’s EVERYTHING. But get this – Taylor Lautner, yes, the Taylor Lautner from Sharkboy and Lava Girl, was on Today and basically hinted at being involved with the album! He said, and I quote, ‘I feel safe,’ which, as a fan, I totally read as him confirming he helped with the vault tracks. I’m obsessed, honestly!

Some fans believe Taylor Swift’s songs “Today Was a Fairytale” and “I Can See You” (where she appeared in the music video) were also inspired by her Valentine’s Day co-star. In “I Can See You,” she sings about maintaining a professional relationship, which then turned into something romantic.

Surprisingly, Taylor Swift used to be starstruck by Owl City’s lead singer. Her song “Enchanted” is actually about the night she met him! She even included the word “wonderstruck” in the lyrics as a hint that the song was about him, since he’d used that same word in an email he sent to her.

In a 2010 interview with Yahoo, Taylor explained that when she first met him, her immediate thought was a worried, ‘I really hope you’re not already in love with someone else.’

A year after Taylor’s song came out, Adam replied by recording his own version. He even added new lyrics, singing, “Oh Taylor, I was so enchanted to meet you too.”

He explained in a note on his band’s website that he’s naturally shy and finds it easier to express himself through music. He recorded a song as a response to a beautiful track on their latest record, adding, “You are a true princess from a dreamy fairy tale.”

Taylor Swift used to be very open about the real-life inspirations behind her songs, particularly when it came to her split with Joe Jonas. Shortly after their breakup in 2008, she quickly wrote “Forever & Always” and added it to her album Fearless just in time for her appearance on Ellen. During the show, she famously criticized Jonas for ending their relationship with a very short phone call – lasting only 25 to 27 seconds.

Taylor Swift’s 2010 album, Speak Now, featured two songs seemingly about Joe Jonas. One was the emotional ballad “Last Kiss,” which specifically mentions July 9th – the date she saw the Jonas Brothers perform while they were still dating.

Taylor also included the song “Better Than Revenge” on the album, which was her response to the Jonas Brothers’ song “Much Better.” That song seemed to be about her, with a lyric referencing “superstars and all the tears on her guitar.”

As Taylor Swift’s music evolved, she began referencing her relationship with Joe Alwyn more positively. Songs like “Holy Ground” on her Red album and “Invisible String” on folklore hinted at their connection, with the latter reflecting on how they later became friends. In “Invisible String,” she sings about moving past heartbreak, famously noting, “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart,” and adding, “Now I send their babies presents.”

Taylor Swift continued to playfully reference her past relationship with Joe Jonas with the release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, including the song “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” which she actually wrote around the time they broke up in 2008. Interestingly, Joe Jonas’s then-wife, Sophie Turner, appeared to confirm the song was about him, sharing it on social media and jokingly calling it “not a bop.”
